“The Wendy Williams Show” Is Officially Ending, And Sherri Shepherd Is Taking Over

Last we heard from Wendy Williams, she was strolling on a Florida beach promising to return to her talk show The Wendy Williams Show after taking a long break due to all sorts of issues. There have been reports that Wendy is suffering from dementia and she’s been fighting Wells Fargo over control of her bank accounts (Wells Fargo froze her accounts over concern that she’s being exploited). And during all of this mess, Sherri Shepherd was named the permanent guest host of The Wendy Williams Show. Welp, the triumphant return to TV that Wendy promised will have to wait because it was announced today that her show is ending after 13 seasons and Sherri will take over her old spot in the fall.

The Blast says that producers of The Wendy Williams Show let employees know that the show is coming to an end in June but that they weren’t being fired and are welcome to work on Sherri’s show. Sources say that executive producers have been trying to get Wendy out even before Wendy took a medical leave because apparently, she’s as pleasant as an itchy wig.

“[Wendy] had become somewhat unbearable, having tantrums and throwing things at people. Basically, the consensus among the crew is that she didn’t wanna be there anymore. Her illnesses may have exacerbated that feeling.”

TVLine adds that Sherri has been in talks to take over and it was made official today. Sherri is obviously happy about it and released this statement:

“OMG! I am so excited to have my dream come true and debut my very own talk show Sherri in the fall… I can’t wait until I return to NY to host the show and merge everything I love…pop culture, talk, entertainment and comedy. I am thankful to Debmar-Mercury and Fox for partnering with me on this show and look forward to this new journey.”

And here’s Sherri’s announcement video:

But while the people at Fox and Debmar-Mercury are ready to hype up Sherri’s crowning, they also paid respect to Wendy calling her exit “bittersweet.”

“First of all, thanks to Debmar-Mercury for navigating through an extremely trying situation and providing stations with first-run programming throughout,” Frank Cicha, EVP of Programming for Fox Television Stations, said. “Secondly, Sherri is the perfect choice for this. Her appeal to our audience is clear, plus she’s already a member of the FTS family as host of Dish Nation.”

…”This is also a bittersweet moment for us and our partners at Fox,” Debmar-Mercury Co-Presidents Mort Marcus and Ira Bernstein said. “We all have a great love and affinity for Wendy, who grew into a true icon during her 12 incredible seasons as the solo host of a live, daily talk show dishing on “Hot Topics” and interviewing celebrities. Since Wendy is still not available to host the show as she continues on her road to recovery, we believe it is best for our fans, stations and advertising partners to start making this transition now. We hope to be able to work with Wendy again in the future, and continue to wish her a speedy and full recovery.”

TVLine also says that Sherri’s show will use segments from Wendy’s show like Hot Topics. Sherri should be okay doing Hot Topics as long as she learns from Wendy and doesn’t make jokes about dead people, and also stays away from the subject of the shape of the planet. And good thing Sherri figured out her child support issues with her ex, Lamar Sally, several years ago. But I wouldn’t be surprised if that man smells her new checks coming in and goes to his lawyers like: “So it’s been like five years, can I still come for this woman for her money, or no?”
