Open Post: Hosted By The Teaser Trailer For “Deep Water” Starring Ben Affleck And Ana de Armas

Talk about giving it all away in the trailer! I cannot believe that after 5,000 miles of pap stroll pavement pounded, 1,000 outfit changes, 1,000 Dunkin’ cold brews with an extra pump, 500 discarded surgical masks, 6-feet of fence climbed, two airport make-out sessions, and one cardboard cutout discarded in the trash, we finally know the why behind Our Year of BenAna. And in the new teaser trailer for Dark Water, the movie that started it all, Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas lay all their cards out on the table. And the deck is stacked. With Jokers. Seriously, I say the jokes write themselves a lot, probably too much, but you have to believe me when I say I couldn’t write a more perfect punchline to this affair than the one BenAna delivers in just a few lines of dialog.

I kid you not. According to People:

Ana de Armas and Ben Affleck are on the same wavelength.

The actors costar in a steamy new teaser for their upcoming psychological thriller Deep Water, which showcases an intimate moment between their married-couple characters on a sunny day. De Armas’ Melinda looks into the eyes of Affleck’s Vic as she asks, “Why are you the only man who wants to stay with me?”

Moments later, she declares, “There’s something wrong with me,” as Affleck’s Vic responds ominously, “There’s something wrong with me too.”

I mean, yes we knew as much from those first heady days in Cuba, but to hear them say it with all the gravity reserved for a trailer that self-importantly pan-zooms the words “From The Director of Fatal Attraction, Indecent Proposal And 9 ½ Weeks,” is more satisfying than I could have imagined. Here’s the trailer.

Oh, snap, I thought this might be a sequel to Teeth for a minute there. But I’m only a little disappointed. I’m really glad this movie will finally see the light of day. I can’t believe that in the just over two years since Ben and Ana met on the set of a laughably bad movie, cemented themselves as Legends Of The Stunt, went IG official, cohabitated, kissed in a music video, house-shopped, played happy blended family, floated engagement rumors and then broke up all for Ben to turn around and get back together with Jennifer Lopez who he met on the set of the laughably bad movie Gigli 20 years before. It’s almost too perfect. Which I guess is kind of the movie’s plot?

According to Deep Water‘s official logline, the story “takes us inside the marriage of picture-perfect Vic and Melinda Van Allen to discover the dangerous mind games they play and what happens to the people that get caught up in them.” It’s based on the Patricia Highsmith novel of the same name, and directed by Fatal Attraction filmmaker Adrian Lyne.

Deep Water was originally slated to premiere in November 2020, but was pushed to August 2021 and later January 2022 before making the switch to streaming. Affleck, 49, and de Armas, 33, met on the set of the film, which began production in 2019, and began dating shortly after.

The movie is co-written by Zach Helm and Euphoria creator Sam Levinson, and the cast also includes Jacob Elordi, Tracy Letts, Lil Rel Howery, Dash Mihok, Finn Wittrock, Kristen Connolly, Rachel Blanchard, Michael Braun, Jade Fernandez, Grace Jenkins, Brendan C. Miller, Devyn Tyler and Jeff Pope.

I feel like Ana with her little bite of popcorn (or is it cheese) which magically turns into a cherry, is all but inviting us to come to the theater en mass, drunk and stoned, to throw popcorn at the screen and have the fucking time of our lives. And I’m sold. We started this pandemic with BenAna, trapped in our homes (or out working like dogs trying to avoid death at every turn), unable to enjoy the simple pleasures in life, like going to a bad movie at the rowdy theater and basking in the humanity of it all. Too bad it’s only coming out on Hulu. Still, I predict Dark Water will become the biggest mid-night cult movie phenomenon since The Rocky Horror Picture Show and I can’t wait to mimic Ben’s sex moans and yell “There’s something wrong with me too!” at the screen while wearing a sundress and cardigan from Delia’s.
