Whoopi Goldberg Is Back At “The View” After Her Two-Week Suspension

Anyone who had $20 on “Whoopi’s not coming back” in their The View betting pool is out some cash today. Because Whoopi Goldberg made her return to the moderator’s chair at The View. Whoopi was forced to take a two-week mandatory self-reflection break after she said that the Holocaust wasn’t about race. It didn’t go over well. It went over so poorly, Whoopi was forced to issue several apologies, and she was put in a 14-day time out. But, she has served her time to the satisfaction of ABC, because of Whoopi’s back! And this time, she’s…well, she’s still probably going to say stuff that makes people at home yell “Whoopi, no!“.

Whoopi’s grand return happened on Valentine’s Day. Because nothing says I Love You like ABC and the producers of The View bringing back a person who got them ten tons of headlines and attention, no matter how messy those headlines and that attention may have been. Whoopi sort of addressed her situation at the top of the show, but generally kept it vague. Come on folk, you know why she wasn’t there for two weeks. via People magazine:

“Hello, hello, hello and welcome to The View. And yes, I am back,” Goldberg said as [Joy] Behar told her, “We missed you.”

“I missed you all too. I got to tell you, there’s something kind of marvelous about being on a show like this because we are The View and this is what we do. Sometimes we don’t do this as eloquently as we could,” Goldberg said, though she did not mention the controversy that got her suspended.

If ABC has begun the process to cast for the next season of Dancing With The Stars, they should strongly consider Whoopi as a possible contender for that mirrorball trophy. Because Whoopi seamlessly danced her way around her Holocaust comments controversy while attempting to address the elephant in the room. via People:

“It’s five minutes to get in important information about topics and that’s what we try to do every day. I want to thank everybody who reached out while I was away. People reached out from places that made me go, ‘Wait, what, what, really?’ And it was amazing.”

I listened to everything everybody had to say and I was very grateful and I hope it keeps all the important conversations happening because we’re going to keep having tough conversations. And in part, because this is what we were hired to do,” she said. “It’s not always pretty as I said and it’s not always what other people would like to hear, but it is an honor to sit at the table and be able to have these conversations because they’re important. They’re important to us as a nation and important to us more as a human entity.”

Here’s a clip of Whoopi’s return:

So essentially, Whoopi, Joy Behar, and the rest only get five minutes to chit-chat about whatever the producers tell them to chit-chat about, and not all of them have a comprehensive TED Talk worth of topic notes at their disposal, so please brace yourselves for potentially more Holocaust-style whoopsies in the future. Eloquence be damned! That’s a decent warning and one that ABC can keep in their back pocket. The next time they think Whoopi or anyone else is going to come out with a problematic non-sequitur like, “Apropos of nothing, here’s what I know about welfare reform,” a producer can quickly flash a de-escalation cue card that reads: BREAKING!! New Topic – Are Chairs Getting Too Comfortable?
