Earlier today, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences announced this year’s Oscar nominations. And lo and behold, one of the names missing from the category of Best Actress was that of Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta herself. Gaga campaigned so hard for a Best Actress nomination for her role as Patrizia Reggiani in House of Gucci, but she got nothing this morning. However, don’t think Lady Gaga is spending the afternoon writing an angry, expletive-filled email to Mr. Oscar. Lady Gaga went ahead and released a little statement of sorts, and she’s very graciously accepting her fate today.
House of Gucci nabbed just one Oscar nomination today. Göran Lundström, Anna Carin Lock, and Frederic Aspiras were nominated for Makeup and Hairstyling. That also means that House of Gucci now has less 2022 Oscar nominations than they do 2022 Razzie Award nominations (HoG got two of those, both for Jared Leto’s insane murder mystery dinner theater-level accent and scene-chewing). After the nominations were announced, Lady Gaga posted a picture of herself and Frederic Aspiras and explained that she’s been working with him for 15 years and could not be more thrilled that her friend was recognized today. Of course, Lady Gaga had to also address the giant Gucci-clad elephant in the room, which she did by congratulating all the nominees, saying that all the performances were incredible, especially in light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Don’t cry for Lady Gaga just yet. She might not have received that coveted Oscar nomination today, but she still has a few chances to take home some awards for her performance as not a particularly ethical person. Lady Gaga was nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role by the British Academy Film Awards, Best Actress by the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards, and two SAG Awards (Female Actor in a Leading Role and Outstanding Performance by a Cast), among others. Those nominations are currently pending, so who knows? Maybe Lady Gaga will walk home with an award for staying in character for too damn long after all. Actually, what if that was the curse Patrizia Reggiani actually placed on Lady Gaga? Not the constant swarm of flies, but the curse of a 2022 Oscar snub! The flies might have just been a free with curse purchase situation.
