Yooooolaaaaaaaaaaanda Vega!

If you live in New York and watch the lottery drawing, then you win when the Queen of The New York Lottery, Yolanda Vega, fills your ear tunnels with a powerful shot of charisma from her declaring that she’s Yooooooolaaaaanda Vega! Yolanda Vega was an HSOTD twelve years ago when I lived in NYC and had the pleasure of being entertained by her sparkly delivery. And she’s making an encore performance in this space because she announced that she’s turning in her crown as the Queen Of The New York Lottery. It’s the end of an eeeeeeraaaaaa!

Earlier this week, the New York Lottery announced that after 32 years of calling the lottery numbers for the state, she has retired:

The NYDN says that after graduating from Hunter College with a B.A. in economics, Yolanda Vega worked as an accountant for a bagel company. In 1990, she was told about an audition for New York State Lottery hostess and was encouraged to go for it. Yolanda didn’t think she would land the gig but went for it anyway and got it. But her signature delivery of her own name didn’t happen until six months later and it’s thanks to caffeine. This makes sense because every time I hear Yolanda Vega announce that she’s Yolanda Vega, I get taken up, up, and away!

“I came in and I had drank a lot of Puerto Rican espresso and I was pumped up,” she said. “I said, ‘With the New York Lottery, I’m YOLAAANDA VEGAAAA.’ And they said, ‘Woah, what are you doing?’ And I said, ‘That’s who I am and I’m proud of who I am.’ “

And here’s Yolanda making her tonsils tingle something extra over the years with her iconic name yodeling:

Honestly, when Queen Yooooooolaaaaanda took her final bow on the New York Lottery stage, the New York Lottery should’ve taken its final bow too. I mean, you can’t really win the New York Lottery unless your numbers are called by thee one and only Yooooolaaanda Vega. I’m pretty sure that’s in the New York State Constitution.
