Adam McKay Is Producing A Movie About The January 6 Capitol Riots

It’s been just over a year since a pack of unwashed maniacs bum-rushed the U.S. Capitol and took a dump on the democratic process (and also the rugs). So of course, a bunch of Hollywood dudes are falling over themselves to be the first to stunt cast the QAnon Shaman. Poor Aaron Sorkin’s head must be spinning because, according to Deadline, Adam McKay has swooped in with lightning speed to comment “FIRST!” Fresh off of making a mockery of climate change with Don’t Look Up, Adam’s poised to make a mockery of “the worst domestic attack on democracy since the Civil War” as producer of F6 with writer/director Billy Ray, the man who made a mockery of the Trump administration with the Showtime series The Comey Rule. Are you tired? I know I’m tired. Why aren’t Hollywood dudes tired yet?

Never mind that that shit is still under investigation, if Adam and Billy don’t get their grubby little hands on it now, somebody else might get credit for their hilarious jokes about that one guy who really took a stand. You know, Nancy Pelosi’s lectern! Deadline reports:

The January 6 assault on the U.S. Capitol, considered the worst domestic attack on democracy since the Civil War, will be the subject of J6, a feature film scripted and to be directed by Billy Ray as his follow-up to the highly rated Showtime miniseries The Comey Rule. Joining him is Adam McKay, who is in the Oscar hunt now for Don’t Look Up. McKay will produce along with Todd Schulman, Josh McLaughlin, Cullen Hoback and Shane Salerno, latter of whom was exec producer on the Jeff Daniel-Brendan Gleeson starrer The Comey Rule.

Deadline has confirmed that the J6 script will be shopped to studios and streamers imminently, and that conversations with equity financiers have already begun.

Sounds insufferable, I know, but it could have been worse. Billy Ray originally wanted to do this as a “long look at the events of January 6 in the form of another limited series.” So at least we’re not going to have to endure a second season because people just couldn’t get enough of Jennifer Lawrence as Ivanka Trump.

McKay was preparing for the Netflix release of the star-studded Don’t Look Up, but he read the script and was moved by the material and Ray’s passion enough to agree to come aboard with Schulman as a producer.

Ray, who initially developed a J6 project at Showtime as a five-episode limited series, went back to the drawing board. He turned 300 pages of scripted material into a 120-page feature script and created something entirely new.

“Billy has written a screenplay that is not only harrowing and terrifying but is sure to become the definitive cinematic document on that gut-wrenching day,” McKay said.

Ew! So it’s not even a comedy? No thanks, I’ll just wait until January 6, 2025, to watch the real thing happen again.
