Animal Crack-Ups!

Tomorrow would’ve been universal treasure Betty White’s 100th birthday, and in honor of that special day, let’s pay tribute to just one of the many game shows she graced her magnificent presence with. Animal Crack-Ups was a game show from the 80s where four celebrities competed with each other while answering questions about animals. You would think that a game show about animals that featured the legendary Betty White would run for eons, but it only lasted a quick minute.

Animal Crack-Ups was the U.S. version of Wakuwaku Dōbutsu Land, a hit game show from the land of game show fuckery known as Japan. There were versions of it all over the world and the U.S. version made its debut in 1987 on ABC. It was hosted by Alan Thicke, who also crooned out the show’s theme song Animals Are Just Like People Too (aka a song that was a billion times better than anything crooned out by Alan’s son Robin).

During each show, Alan Thicke would show four celebrity contestants a clip about an animal and he’d ask them a question about that animal. The celebrity who got the question right would win a stuffed animal. The contestant with the most stuffed animals at the end of the game would win $2,500 for the animal charity of their choice. Throughout the show’s run, celebrity contestants included Queen of Game Shows Betty White, Alan’s Growing Pains castmates, Christina Applegate, and Jimmie Walker. The show also starred a plushie hedgehog who filled our brains with even more animal facts.

Below is a full episode, and SPOILER ALERT, Betty White wins it all, which is the DUH of DUHs.

ABC originally aired it during primetime, but after only a month, moved it to Saturday mornings. They ended up canceling it in 1989.

I remember watching this on Saturdays with my sister but I didn’t play along, because that would’ve been unfair and unethical. I mean, at that age, I was already a highly-esteemed wildlife expert thanks to the fact that I read at least one card from my Wildlife Treasury collection. Okay, half a card.
