Open Post: Hosted By A Movie About The Beanie Babies Craze That Will Star Zach Galifianakis And Elizabeth Banks

Why yes, did I specifically choose that picture of Elizabeth Banks because she’s wearing the exact same color as the limited edition 1997 Ty Beanie Baby Princess Diana memorial bear? Sadly, I was unable to find a beanie match for Zach Galifianakis. But as much as I wish this was a weird live-action Beanie Babies movie, it’s not – it’s much less weird than that. Unless you count the weirdos that thought they’d be billionaires off Beanie Babies, then yes, this is pretty weird.

The Wrap says that Apple Original Films is working on The Beanie Bubble, which will be co-directed by Kristin Gore, who is best known for writing on Futurama, and Damian Kulash, who is the frontman for the band OK Go. The film will be based on the book The Great Beanie Baby Bubble: Mass Delusion and the Dark Side of Cute by Zac Bissonnette. As mentioned above, Zach and Elizabeth will star in the film, and Zach will also serve as an executive producer. The Beanie Bubble will co-star Succession’s Sarah Snook and Geraldine Viswanathan from Blockers.

Anyone who lived through the Beanie Baby craze of the late 90s knows that Beanie Baby collectors could get more obsessed and crazed than 15-year-old me trying to get my hands on a bottle of Orbitz. This is its plot:

Their film is inspired by the Beanie Babies craze and particularly the female relationship to the toys and the idea of the American Dream. It follows the women who helped surround the craze and helped make Ty Warner’s toys into a phenomenon but whose names and legacies weren’t represented on each Beanie’s heart-shaped tags.

The creator, Ty Warner, literally had his name on every tag, so it sounds like a big part of this movie will focus on women getting shafted from receiving credit for the Beanies they created. Ty Warner is still alive and is often referred to as being an eccentric billionaire and sole owner and CEO of Ty Inc. It’s not yet known who will play who in the film.

The Beanie Bubble can’t all be about what it was like to work at Beanie Baby HQ. There definitely needs to be at least a few scenes of midwestern moms losing their minds when the local greeting card store gets in a new shipment of Beanie Babies. I just really hope there’s a scene where the people at Big Beanie started to run out of ideas, and they started making the weird, not-as-cute Beanies, like the snail that kind of looks like an anatomy class preserved penis and single misshapen ball. I want a scene where Helen and Karen both look in disgust and say, “Uh, you can take this one.
