Rooney Mara Will Star As Audrey Hepburn In An Upcoming Biopic Directed By Luca Guadagnino

Because not every movie can be Spider-Man, Hollywood has gone back to one of their more reliable wells. It’s time to dig through the catalog of stars past, and see who is next up in the running to be the subject of a buzzy prestige biopic. And that person is beloved Oscar-winning actress and UNICEF humanitarian Audrey Hepburn! And according to Deadline, this biopic’s Audrey will be played by Rooney Mara.

This new Audrey Hepburn biopic will be made by Apple TV+ and will be directed by Luca Guadagnino, who directed Call Me By Your Name. On top of starring as Audrey, Rooney will be a producer. It will be written by Michael Mitnick, who was the executive producer on HBO’s Vinyl.

There’s not much that’s currently known about the project, but considering Rooney Mara is only 36, it’s probably unlikely they’re going to do her up in age-progression makeup for Audrey’s end of life. Audrey was born in Belgium and grew up in German-occupied Netherlands. She eventually made it to London as a ballet dancer where she got into theater as a chorus girl, before she landed her big break, a part in the Broadway production of Gigi. She appeared in numerous iconic films, like Tiffany’s, Roman Holiday, and My Fair Lady, and would go on to be nominated for five Oscars throughout her career (winning one), and was an EGOT, which she obtained with a Primetime Emmy Award win eight months after her death. She died in 1993, at the age of 63, from cancer.

Of course, you might know all of this already, had you seen the incredible made-for-TV masterpiece, The Audrey Hepburn Story starring Sarah Hyland, Emmy Rossum, and of course Jennifer Love Hewitt. Right after it was announced that Rooney Mara will be slipping into Audrey’s little back dress and tiara, The New York Post reported that some people on the internet started shouting that Lily Collins was ROBBED, while others pointed out that Rooney’s casting might have had Emily in Paris fuming over her croissant at breakfast.

What many are missing is that Rooney Mara is a two-time Oscar-nominated actress who will probably learn how to act like Audrey Hepburn. Lily Collins looks like Audrey, but we all know that’s not necessarily enough to carry a whole movie. Also, it could be worse. There have been some recent biopics where the actress didn’t look a thing like the icon they were portraying. If Lily is actually bummed out, maybe she could call up a friend who can reassure her that she will always be the most-authentic-looking Audrey on Halloween night. Or she can just message Debra Messing and ask how soon is too soon to tweet that she’s still totally available.
