The trailer for Janet Jackson is here! The Lifetime documentary about the legendary Janet Jackson features never-before-seen footage of her life and interviews with her and her family, and obviously, there’s a lot to unpack there since she’s spent decades in the music business and comes from one of the most famous families in human history. And the documentary gets into Janet’s Super Bowl nipple exposure, Justin Timberlake groveling for her forgiveness, and even the pedophile allegations against her brother Michael Jackson.

Janet Jackson premieres at the end of the month on Lifetime and A&E, with part one of the two-part series coming out on January 28th, which coincides with the 40th anniversary of Janet Jackson’s 1982 self-titled debut album. Janet co-executive produced the doc along with her brother Randy Jackson (not the American Idol one). The official synopsis says, via E! News:

“Janet has enjoyed immense success but also seen incredible tragedy… She has endured a tumultuous private life in the face of extraordinary public scrutiny. With no stone left unturned, Janet Jackson lifts the lid on her private life for the very first time and reveals the most intimate moments of the star ever caught on camera… The documentary details Janet’s return to the world stage following a sudden break from music.”

The documentary will also get into how Janet’s brother Michael was charged with sexually abusing a 13-year-old boy in 2005 and was later acquitted of the charges. Janet says in the documentary that the trial affected her career:

“There’s a great deal of scrutiny that comes with having that last name,” Janet says in the documentary, according to an extended trailer. The video also shows footage of the King of Pop’s Neverland Ranch and him leaving a courthouse with Janet and their mom Katherine Jackson after a day of proceedings in his 2005 child molestation trial. Janet is then asked if the “allegations” affected her, career-wise. “Yeah,” she said. “Guilty by association. I guess that’s what they call it, right?”

And of course, the trailer touches on Janet’s Super Bowl mess with Justin Timberlake. Janet wanted nothing to do with the New York Times doc about it, Malfunction: The Dressing Down of Janet Jackson. Justin headlined the Super Bowl Halftime Show in 2018 and back then he said that he and Janet were all good, but the trailer shows that she turned him down when he invited her to make an appearance during his halftime set.

Here’s the trailer which features some big-name people like Missy Elliott, Whoopi Goldberg, Ciara, Mariah Carey, Paula Abdul, Samuel L. Jackson, Regina King, Tyler Perry, Janelle Monae, and Teyana Taylor:

Hopefully, when Janet is asked about Justin, she simply pulls out some uncooked Top Ramen and slowly chews on it while throwing unamused eyes. And I also hope that there’s a follow-up to this doc of nothing but Samuel L. Jackson grooving to her music on a loop.
