Bette Midler Apologized For Talking Shit About The People Of West Virginia

West Virginians, rise up! Bette Midler has come for you! Yesterday Bette took to Twitter to blast Democratic senator Joe Manchin for continuing to block President Biden’s infrastructure plan in Congress. She tweeted that Joe won’t let America move forward, and “he wants us all to be just like his state, West Virginia. Poor, illiterate, and strung out.” Yeesh, tell us what you really think, Bette! Obviously Bette got a lot of heat for her comments on Twitter, and less than an hour later she apologized to “the good people of WVA” for her outburst. West Virginians, stand down!

Here is Bette’s first tweet:

The replies to the original tweet were fast and furious, with many accusing Bette promoting unfair stereotypes about the Mountain State. Other replies were more along the lines of “Well, what else do ya expect from a Hollywood communist?!” Soon Bette retweeted one of the pro-West Virginia replies:

And then she straight up apologized (but still continued to insult Joe Manchin):

Bette was born and raised in Hawaii, which has an 84% literacy rate. Meanwhile, West Virginia has an 86% literacy rate, so, actually, they’ve got Bette’s home state beat. However, West Virginia is one of the most impoverished states, and it’s #1 for opioid overdose deaths. So that’s a bummer. Either way, don’t be mean to West Virginians, Bette. You’re talking shit about the home of Conchata Ferrell, Bill Withers, and Don Knotts! Please note that all those people are dead, so maybe get ready to welcome three wacky celebrity ghosts this Christmas Eve…
