Rebel Wilson’s Team Thought Losing Weight Might Mess With Her Career

December 7, 2021 / Posted by:

Last January, Rebel Wilson declared 2020 “The Year of Health.” Unfortunately for us, 2020 thought she said “The Year from Hell.” Goddammit, Rebel, next time please enunciate. But a pesky lil’ pandemic didn’t stop the 41-year-old from pursuing her fitness and healthy eating goals. She went full Adele, and lost almost 80 pounds. In a recent BBC interview Rebel talks about how her Hollywood team wasn’t supportive of her health journey, since she was making them money being the “funny fat girl.” So if you hear of any agents or managers being forced to sell their second home in Aspen or brand new Maserati… it’s because Rebel Wilson lost weight. Tragedy.

Rebel says, via People:

“I got a lot of pushback from my own team actually, here in Hollywood, when I said ‘Okay, I’m going to do this year of health, I feel like I’m really gonna physically transform and change my life,’ ” Wilson recounted.

“And they were like, ‘Why? Why would you wanna do that?’ Because I was earning millions of dollars being the funny fat girl and being that person,” she added.

Last June, Rebel said she was literally paid to stay fat and it messed with her head. In this interview, she says that she was “very confident” and loved herself, despite the fact that she was sometimes double or triple the size of her fellow actresses. But Rebel says that she knew deep down “some of the emotional eating behaviors I was doing was not healthy”:

“Like I did not need a tub of ice cream every night. That was me kind of numbing emotions using food, which wasn’t the healthiest thing,” she told BBC. “I think it was dealing with not being a natural performer, and having to perform every day. And that pressure and internal stress to be able to perform like that.”

Rebel goes on to say that as a fat woman she was largely seen as “invisible,” and she was surprised about all the attention she got after losing weight:

“It’s fascinating. Why are people so obsessed with women, in particular, about their looks?” the actress added. “I know what it’s like to be a woman who is essentially invisible to most people because of not being seen as traditionally beautiful or whatever. It’s crazy to try to fit that. It’s just better to be the healthiest version.”

Here’s Rebel’s interview:

I’d like to give Rebel a giant “Speak for yourself” re: her assertion that she didn’t need a nightly tub of ice cream. Some of us need to wolf down pints of Häagen Dazs Mint Chocolate Chip to numb our daily traumas. And fuck that Halo Top shit. The non-alcoholic beer of the ice cream world.
