Ridley Scott Blames Millennials With Cellphones For The Box Office Failure Of “The Last Duel”

Ridley Scott directed two big movies that came out this year: House of Mario Bros. Gucci which is out this week, and The Last Duel, which was released on October 15. Well, change the name from The Last Duel to “The Most Recent Flop” because it tanked at the box office. The film starred Matt Damon and Adam Driver who enter a duel to the death after Jodie Comer‘s character accuses Adam’s character of rape. Audiences did not pour into theaters to watch a period piece about a woman’s sexual assault and Ridley thinks he knows why. Ridley believes his movie tanked because millennials love using their phones… or something.

Since coming out in October, The Last Duel has made a whopping $10 million at the domestic box office and $27 million worldwide. Its production budget was $100 million. While on Marc Maron’s WTF podcast (via The Hollywood Reporter), Ridley talked about his movies and the talk turned to the recent turkey he released far ahead of Thanksgiving. The movie focuses on Jodie’s character, but the marketing made it seem like a dude-centric movie about a woman’s sexual assault. But Ridley was sure not to put any blame on his overlords at Disney (which acquired the Fox studio) and said they did everything right promo-wise:

“Disney did a fantastic promotion job. The bosses loved the movie. …I was concerned it was not for them.”

What was the cause? What else–young people!

“I think what it boils down to–what we’ve got today [are] the audiences who were brought up on these fucking cellphones. The millennian [sic] do not ever want to be taught anything unless you’re told it on a cellphone… This is a broad stroke, but I think we’re dealing with it right now with Facebook. This is a misdirection that has happened where it’s given the wrong kind of confidence to this latest generation, I think.”

Scott said he stood firmly by The Last Duel, and the decision-making process at the studio was solid throughout. “That’s the call you make,” he said of his undertaking the project. “That’s the call Fox made. We all thought it was a terrific script. And we made it. You can’t win all the time. I’ve never had one regret on any movie I’ve ever made. Nothing. I learned very early on to be your own critic. The only thing you should really have an opinion on is what you just did. Walk away. Make sure you’re happy. And don’t look back. That’s me.”

Since Ridley is blaming everyone but himself, clouds should brace themselves because Ridley may soon raise his fist at the sky while blaming them for The Last Duel flopping.

But the most egregious issue with the film? Four words: bleach, blonde, Ben, Affleck.

Who did this? We need to shut down Hollywood until we figure out what’s going on over there. The chin too? A bleach-blond goatee? REALLY?

If Ridley Scott doesn’t want his next movie to bomb, he should give the people what they really want and devote an entire movie to Adam Driver either singing while eating coochie or transforming into a centaur.
