The First Reactions To “House Of Gucci” Are All Over The Place
Method actress Lady Gaga‘s next Oscar vehicle, House of Gucci, comes out on November 24 and recently had its UK premiere. A lot of critic-types have already seen it and Variety says that the social media embargo recently lifted on the film, meaning they were free to talk shit about it on Twitter–which people did. And much like the hammed-up accents in the movie, it seems that reactions to the film are all over the place.
House of Gucci from director Ridley Scott, is the story of Patrizia Reggiani (played by Gaga) who was married to Maurizio Gucci (played by Adam Driver) and was tried and convicted for planning his 1995 murder. The film also stars Jared Leto, Jeremy Irons, Salma Hayek, and Al Pacino. The trailers had me thinking this was going to be a campy mess and depending on who you talk to, I was right.
Full reviews arrive on November 22 but so far these comments are diametrically opposed to each other at points. One person said it gave him Godfather vibes. Here go hell come for him because the movie-buff crowd is gonna eat him up for that comparison. Another called it “an overwrought slog without any discernible direction.” Others praised Gaga and Adam’s chemistry, and Al Pacino got called the “MVP.” But Jared Leto’s performance seemed to be the most controversial of the bunch. Someone called him “cartoonish” while another person said it was his “best since his Oscar win.” The fuck? Pick a lane. But hey, regardless of what you think of his performance, you will get to see Jared piss on a Gucci scarf while dressed in fancy The Penguin drag, so… if that’s something you’re into. Here are some of the reactions:
GUCCI! #HouseOfGucci has a definite GODFATHER vibe, rich w/ family betrayal, transformative performances, lots of backstabbing & it's definitely more serious than it is campy. Lady Gaga is incredible, as is Jared Leto, and the story is WILD! The attention to detail is impeccable pic.twitter.com/BphR07VLP5

House of Gucci is a bloated & uneven mess that feels like two different movies rolled in one. Every single cast member acts as though they are in a different movie except for Al Pacino, who seems to have understood the assignment and serves as the film’s MVP. #HouseofGucci pic.twitter.com/Y5NvVkNvqI

House of Gucci = juicy caviar camp, an absurdly enjoyable Italian soap opera where Bald Jared Leto pisses on a Gucci scarf. It ultimately eases on its gas to a fault, but Lady Gaga's earnest, ferocious performance completes her evolution from movie star to mighty dramatic actréss

#HouseofGucci is an overwrought slog without any discernible direction. Too many narrative focuses stacked on top of one another. Glitzy talented names hamming it up in wealth porn can be fun, but not enough to save the movie from its own messiness

Lacking in energy, style & camp, HOUSE OF GUCCI plods through deadly serious drama for 2.5 hours with an uneven tone. Lady Gaga, Adam Driver & Al Pacino deliver but a cartoonish Jared Leto feels like he’s in a different film. A disappointingly mediocre effort from Ridley Scott. pic.twitter.com/UIQod5wbYm

.@HouseOfGucciMov is absolutely divine. It is murderously delicious. The cast delivers the best performances of the year. Luxuriate with Adam Driver and Lady Gaga whose chemistry and performances are phenomenal. The film is a masterclass in acting. pic.twitter.com/PGmiZ1q05J

#HouseOfGucci is quite the animal. Campy, everything Ridley Scott wanted "The Counselor" to be but wasn't able to. Will be divided by many. Lady Gaga eats every morsel of her role up. Instantly the most quotable/meme-able movie since "Borat." Jared Leto best since his Oscar win. pic.twitter.com/xh8nFrDXmC

#HouseofGucci is delicious and fun. Couldn't take my eyes off of it. @ladygaga and @JaredLeto are the most delicious of the bunch.

#HouseOfGucci Big & soapy, this really hit the spot for me. Everything Leto & Pacino do is lol ridiculous, yet nicely balanced with Driver & Gaga’s mannered 50s melodrama turns. Ridley Scott has everyone acting in the same movie, while going big with glorious gusto.

Let’s see how the Gucci family reacts to this film. They have already said that they were worried about how Ridley Scott is going to treat their family’s legacy. Well, when they see Jared pissing on one of their scarves, they’re gonna release a video of one of them pissing on a copy of Suicide Squad in return, which is redundant since Suicide Squad is already a puddle of lukewarm piss.
