Kylie Jenner Says That She And Travis Scott Were “Unaware Of Any Fatalities” Until After His Astroworld Show Ended

The first night of Travis Scott’s Astroworld 2021 music festival in Houston, TX turned into a horrific nightmare where eight young people lost their lives. Four of the victims have been identified as 14-year-old John Hilgert,  21-year-old Franco Patino, 23-year-old Rudy Peña, and 16-year-old Brianna Rodriguez. Around 300 people were treated at the festival, and two dozen were taken to the hospital including a 10-year-old boy. In his first statement, Travis said he was “devastated,” but after more and more videos and stories came out about how he continued to perform as audience members passed out in the stampede and other audience members screamed at him for help, he put out a series of damage control Instagram Stories.

Travis’ girlfriend, Kylie Jenner, who was there, also did a little damage control after she was called out for leaving up Instagram Stories of an ambulance driving through the massive crowd. Kylie says that she and Travis had no idea that people were dying or else the show would’ve ended. But The Houston Chronicle went through videos and social media posts to put together a timeline of events, and they report that Live Nation, the organizer of Astroworld, agreed to stop the show at 9:38 pm after multiple audience members passed out from getting crushed in the crowd, but the show went on and Travis finished his set at 10:15 pm.

As Consequence of Sound points out, Travis Scott has a history of bringing on chaos at his shows. Travis was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct in 2015 after police said he was encouraging the audience at Lollapalooza to ignore security rules by jumping barricades and rushing the stage. A 15-year-old girl was trampled and injured during that show. Travis pled guilty to reckless conduct and was sentenced to probation. But that didn’t stop him from summoning mayhem, and in 2017, he was arrested again in Arkansas after several people were injured when he once again encouraged the crowd to rush the stage. And just weeks after that 2017 show in Arkansas, Travis continued to not give a fuck about the safety of his fans during his show at Terminal 5 in NYC. In a video from that show, Travis encourages fans on the second balcony to jump into the crowd below. A 23-year-old man named Kyle Green says that during that show, he was pushed from a third-story balcony and ended up with several broken bones and is now partially paralyzed. Kyle sued Travis and the lawsuit is still pending. In Travis’ response to the lawsuit, his lawyers denied he’s at fault and that Kyle’s injuries were from “risks voluntarily undertaken” by audience members. Well, Travis Scott’s lawyers are about to be a lot busier.

The Houston Chronicle says that at 2 pm, hours before Travis Scott’s set at Astroworld on Friday night, hundreds of his fans busted through a VIP checkpoint. Some fans were trampled and others were detained. And minutes before Travis took the stage, a giant clock counted down to his performance, which caused the crowd of 50,000 people to push each other toward the stage. Travis’ set began at 9:06 pm and the stampede only got worse. Throughout his set, Travis briefly pressed pause on his show to tell staff to help out someone who had passed out and to also tell the crowd to make room for an ambulance in the audience.

At 9:38, Houston officials declared that the show had turned into a “mass casualty incident.” That’s when the Houston Police Department met with Live Nation and Live Nation agreed to stop the show but the show did not stop. It also didn’t stop after audience members chanted at Travis to stop the show and other audience members begged staff to do something. At 10 pm, Drake joined Travis on stage, which did not help at all. Travis completed his entire set. via THC:

By 10 p.m., more than 20 minutes after the “mass casualty incident,” the concert was showing no signs of stopping as hip-hop artist Drake took the stage with Scott and launched into the song “Knife Talk.” As the song continued, fans begin jumping on some of the emergency vehicles responding to the chaos.

Evans, standing to the left of the stage, said the crowd’s initial push toward the stage had eased, but Drake’s arrival caused fans to “get chaotic again.”

“There were people trying to get medics to come by our area twice because I think someone passed out,” Evans said.

At 10:08 p.m. Scott and Drake launch into “Sicko Mode.” City officials said the concert ended at 10:10 p.m. But attendees said the show ended at 10:15 p.m. with the final song, “Goosebumps.”

Scott had performed all his planned songs.

The Houston Chronicle adds that “stage crews can, in a matter of seconds if necessary, turn off all power to the stage and broadcast safety and security messages on video boards and over the audio system.” Live Nation obviously did not do that.

Drake has yet to respond, but Roddy Rich, who performed earlier in the day, says he will donate the money he was paid for his Astroworld performance to the families of the victims. And in several Instagram Stories, Travis says he’s cooperating with authorities and that his fans mean the world to him. “Is that so?” says all of the fans who have been injured during his past shows. Here’s Travis looking like his team just woke him up from a long nap to say something about the tragedy on Instagram:

And Kylie also claims she’s “devastated” and is sending her “deepest condolences to all the families” affected:

Kylie’s probably also talking about her own family because you know Pimp Mama Kris has been stressing out over how this is going to affect the Koven’s brand.
