Queen Elizabeth Won’t Be Doing Solo Appearances Anymore

Queen Elizabeth appears to be feeling all of her 95 years recently, which causes a problem when your whole life revolves around a job you were thrown into by right of birth and can’t really ever technically retire from. But, a 95-year-old working monarch can slow down a little, which is exactly what The Queen appears to be doing. At the suggestion of her doctors, she’s had to cancel an event in Northern Ireland, and spend a night in a hospital bed to make sure everything is a-ok, health-wise. Now it’s being reported that The Queen won’t be appearing on her own at any future events and will always be accompanied by another senior royal, just in case something goes wrong.

According to sources that spoke to The Telegraph, the Royal Family has started working on a no-Queen-left-alone model, which means that any future public appearances will be performed by The Queen, and a plus one, or two, or hell, throw anyone with some Windsor DNA in there. Their new plan will serve as a safety net to ensure that an event won’t be straight-up canceled if The Queen is suddenly feeling too ill to leave the palace. via Page Six:

By having at least one other senior royal already scheduled, it gives the famously stoic queen the chance to cancel if needed without disappointing the public with a complete royal no-show, the paper said.

Buckingham Palace declined to comment on the Telegraph’s report about the new plan to always have another royal at the queen’s events.

The Queen was a no-show at church on Sunday, and the certainty of future events is unknown. I’m sure that news has conspiracy-prone types wondering if The Queen will actually be at future events, or if we’re about to see Prince Charles and Duchess Camilla assisting “The Queen,” or at least a very old woman wearing a white wig and giant oversized sunglasses, at an event in which the only requests on Her Majesty’s appearance rider are low lighting and zero questions. But that’s not the reality of the situation, and the proof is in the Zoom. AP News reports that Queen Elizabeth held virtual audiences from the comfort of Windsor Castle today, the first since her doctors told her 95-year-old self that she needed to slow down for the sake of her health.

The 95-year-old sovereign greeted the ambassador of the Republic of Korea during her first technology-aided appearance since she was driven to London’s King Edward VII’s Hospital on Oct. 20 for “preliminary investigations.” She returned to her Windsor Castle home at lunchtime the next day.

AP News reports that Liz is scheduled to host world leaders at the United Nations climate summit in Glasgow, Scotland for two weeks, starting on October 31st. Hopefully, she’ll get enough rest before then, otherwise, she might be doing a whole lot of meetings and greeting from the comfort of that dusty old chair in front of her computer monitor. But she’ll likely show up for at least the first day, and really, how many appearances does she have to make during a 13-day event? If you’ve seen her once, you’ve seen her enough. Plus, she doesn’t need to show face. Remember? It’s the Royal Family to the rescue! Besides, The Queen doesn’t want to be around when Prince William gets a little feisty after a few pints, and corners a climate change expert about space colonization. “Oi, can you email me a study that proves I’m right about billionaires in space? A former TV star tried to start a fight with me and I want to come correct when I finally respond. Yeah, I’m in a random fight with Captain Kirk and the Amazon guy…don’t worry about it.
