The Teaser Trailer For “Being The Ricardos” Is Here

Someone please go check on Debra Messing, today is not going to be her best day. Because Amazon Prime Video has released a teaser trailer for Being the Ricardos, aka the movie that made everyone (Debra included) wonder if Aaron Sorkin’s glasses prescription was up to date when it was revealed he had cast Nicole Kidman as Lucille Ball. Eventually, we saw some pictures from the set, and Nicole Kidman’s Lucy pretty much just looked like Nicole Kidman in an emergency backup wig from the set of Big Little Lies. Now we’re seeing Nicole’s Lucy in motion along with the voice, and it will be up to you whether it elicits a nervous Lucy-style clenched-teeth “Eeeeeeeee.

I’ve watched this teaser trailer twice, and it was a very good choice to score the whole thing with a zesty interpretation of the I Love Lucy theme song because it really boosts the trailer with some big Lucille Ball energy. Without it, you may not get “Lucy” and just get Nicole Kidman doing a thick mid-Atlantic accent. You only get a few side-glances at Nicole’s Lucille Ball, and yeah, it’s a red wig and retro wardrobe, alright!

Being the Ricardos hits theaters on December 10th, and drops on Amazon Prime Video on December 21st, so we’ll have to wait until then to see if Nicole really brings it in the personality department. But right now, based on this teaser trailer, I’m not so sure. It’s barely a Lucille Ball impression! I mean, right after Nicole’s Lucy squished her foot into that iconic grape-stomping scene, I felt like Nicole was going to turn her shocked face towards the camera, channel her Chanel commercial, and say, “I love to dance…in these grapes! Oh wait, wrong job

The movie also stars Javier Bardem as Desi Arnaz and  J.K. Simmons as William Frawley, aka Fred Mertz.

There is one part of the trailer that is deeply compelling: a blurry portrait of Lucille. Actually, that’s the biopic I want: the one about the artist who painted that portrait, and how many times they said the words, “Come on, this makes no sense. It’s supposed to be of the character, but the character barely looks like the character it’s based on! Is this really the closest we could get to Lucille Ball??
