The Golden Globes Will Still Give Out Awards This Year Despite NBC Not Airing Them

Looks like Emily In Paris really did to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association what The Weeknd wished he did to the Grammys. JK, it wasn’t all that unilingual semi-fashionable brat’s fault but she did draw a lot of attention. This year the Golden Globes, which are given by the members of the HFPA, were exposed by the LA Times who revealed that there was not one single Black person in their organization as well as “ethical lapses” in the HFPA including accusations of self-dealing. *Cough* Emily In Paris *COUGH!* The HFPA apologized and promised to do better but the pile-on had begun. PR firms told their A-list clients to ignore the Golden Globes until they make big changes. Then NBC canceled the 2022 broadcast and Tom Cruise caught some free attention by returning three of his own Golden Globes. Well, just because no one cares about them anymore doesn’t mean the HFPA won’t go through with a party, Deadline says that even though it won’t be on TV the Golden Globes still plan to give out awards.
The changes that HFPA implemented included finally banning members from receiving gifts. The HPFA also introduced a bunch of other “reforms” and also expanded their members’ pool. You know, to include Black people? In fact, on their homepage now is a story about how they entered into a “groundbreaking multi-year partnership” with the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People). So you can bet your bottom dollar that they will be ethnic-ing up the place as much as possible.
Back in May, NBC canned the awards show for 2022 but said they believed the HFPA was “committed to meaningful reform” and that NBC was “hopeful” they would air the show in 2023 if they actually made changes. Well hello! Look over here! The NAACP! Look, NBC! The HFPA knows tons of Black people now! And a source told Deadline that while the show won’t be aired, it will go on… in some form.
A source said Monday that “the HFPA plans to recognize the performances of 2021 to celebrate the great work of the industry this past year at the 79th Annual Golden Globes.” No additional information on plans was disclosed, apart from the fact that the org’s 21 new members will be able to participate in voting on this year’s honorees. It’s not yet clear whether the typical Golden Globe statuettes will be handed out, but the news comes following a letter sent to studios on October 8 with guidance on eligibility requirements.
Back in 2008, a writers’ strike shut down Hollywood and the HFPA had a press conference to announce winners instead of an awards show–so it’s possible that could be the event they have this year, but who knows.
Hey, if they do have an actual show at least they can always count on the ever-thirsty-for-attention TikTok crowd to go–Addison Rae, this is your year!
