Will Smith Says He And Jada Pinkett Smith Aren’t Monogamous And She Wasn’t The Only One In An “Entanglement”

Fourteen months ago, the strength of the support joints on the red table were tested when Jada Pinkett Smith dropped the heaviest bombshell on her Facebook talk show Red Table Talk. With her husband Will Smith sitting at the table, Jada admitted that she had engaged in an extramarital thing with 29-year-old singer August Alsina, who she met through her son, Jaden Smith. Jada called it an “entanglement,” and it led to a meme of Will Smith’s face looking tear-stained. But save any residual tears for Will Smith, because he recently admitted that Jada’s not the only one in their marriage who is guilty of entangling themselves in someone else’s business.

Will Smith spoke to GQ about some upcoming projects, like Apple TV+’s Emancipation, the film King Richard, and a memoir, Will, that will be released in November. GQ notes that Will does not speak about his “engagements” in his memoir but he did briefly talked about it with them. Will explains that now that he’s three years into his “fuck-it 50s,” he’s speaking candidly about this between himself and Jada. Anyone bracing themselves for Will to fully confirm that long-standing internet rumor that Will and Jada are Scientologists that are into swinging will be disappointed because it doesn’t sound like he admits that. He does admit that he’s good friends with Tom Cruise, which might be a little Scientolo-hint. But let’s move on to Will and Jada’s messy marriage.

During Will’s interview with Wesley Lowery for GQ, he admits that Jada often took a backseat to his own dreams and career. Such as, Jada didn’t want a big, over-the-top traditional wedding, but Will did, so they had one, or that an often miserable Jada didn’t want to move into a massive compound, but Will did so they moved into one. Or that her band, Wicked Wisdom, was offered to open for Guns N’ Roses, but she had to turn it down because Will was still filming The Pursuit of Happyness. He tells the story of screening a documentary he made about her for her 40th birthday party, which Jada hated and accused Will of making it purely as a “disgusting display of ego.” Essentially, Will kind of paints a picture that could be titled: “Yeah, I Get How She Might Have Wanted To Be With Someone Else.

GQ got their hands on an early draft of his memoir and notes that there’s a part about Will and Jada’s not-always-monogamous marriage. Will says he didn’t want to include any stories of cheating, because he didn’t think it was right to detail them from his own perspective. But Will writes that Jada wasn’t the only one who stepped out of their marriage and it sounds like Will is confirming that he and Jada have an open marriage. via Entertainment Tonight:

“Jada never believed in conventional marriage.…Jada had family members that had an unconventional relationship. So she grew up in a way that was very different than how I grew up. There were significant endless discussions about, what is relational perfection? What is the perfect way to interact as a couple? And for the large part of our relationship, monogamy was what we chose, not thinking of monogamy as the only relational perfection.”

Lowery also notes in his GQ story that Will “delicately explained” to him that Jada was not “the only one engaging in other sexual relationships” outside of their marriage.

“We have given each other trust and freedom, with the belief that everybody has to find their own way,” Will says of his and Jada’s arrangement. “And marriage for us can’t be a prison. And I don’t suggest our road for anybody. I don’t suggest this road for anybody. But the experiences that the freedoms that we’ve given one another and the unconditional support, to me, is the highest definition of love.”

As for that meme, Will says that he wasn’t sad or heartbroken. He says he was exhausted because they were filming at midnight and were planning on going on vacation the next day, and that he and Jada had already discussed her thing with August Alsina years previously and he was all talked out.

Is it just me, or does this smell like Will really wants Round 2 at Red Table Talk? I wouldn’t be surprised. I just hope he learns from his first appearance and gets plenty of rest this time around. Will needs to look his best and be as mentally sharp as possible. You wouldn’t want your brain to start buffering and accidentally blurt out the name of MARGOT ROBBIE, you know?
