Frances McDormand’s Flip Phone!
Frances McDormand is a four-time Oscar winner, highly-respected actress, and more importantly, multiple HSOTD recipient. But on top of all of that, she is a champion of the Don’t Give A Fuck movement. Frances will wear a jean jacket to the Tonys. She doesn’t give a fuck. And she’ll proudly carry around her early-aughts flip phone. And her legendary flip phone made an appearance at a New York Film Festival panel in NYC last night. Yup, while some phone snobs would rather be slowly eaten alive by maggots than be seen with last year’s iPhone, Frances McDormand is carrying around the IT phone of…. 2003!
Frances is currently promoting possibleOscar sweeper The Tragedy of Macbeth, which co-stars Denzel Washington and was written and directed by her husband Joel Coen. They all did a panel for it at NYFF, and People says that at one point, Frances’ flip phone started ringing and she did the very mom of thing of answering it to say, “I‘ll call you back,” instead of letting it go to voicemail. And Denzel pointed out to everyone that Frances is a vintage kind of phone user because she’s still got a flip phone:
While director and writer Joel Coen and McDormand’s costars Corey Hawkins, Moses Ingram and Harry Melling discussed the movie at a New York Film Festival panel in New York City on Friday, McDormand’s cell phone started ringing in her pocketbook that sat on the floor. McDormand, 64, grabbed her bag and pulled out the phone. Then she brought it to her mouth, opened it and told the caller, “I’ll call you back.”
Washington, 66, made sure to point out that McDormand — who also produced Macbeth — uses a flip phone.

Everyone says that Frances having a flip phone is very on-brand for her. And yeah it is, but I am a little surprised that she doesn’t have something even more vintage. Like if a ringing came from her pocketbook and she pulled out an empty can of Heinz baked beans from the 70s and it was attached to some twine that led to nowhere and she started talking into that, nobody would bat an eye.
