Open Post: Hosted By Barbra Streisand Letting Us Know That She’s Not A Fan Of The 2018 Remake Of “A Star Is Born”

Over the weekend Barbra Streisand appeared on the Australian talk show, The Sunday Project, and lightly dragged the Lady Gaga/Bradley Cooper adaptation of A Star is Born. Barbra starred in the 1976 version with Kris Kristofferson. Judy Garland led the 1954 adaptation. And the original 1937 film starred Janet Gaynor. According to Barbra, the 2018 version was “the wrong idea.” She thinks it should have been more original, like her version of the story. Damned if you honor Barbra, damned if you don’t.

Barbra explained that when she starred in A Star Is Born she wanted it to be different than the other versions. The original film was about an actress, and Judy Garland’s version was about a musical movie star. Barbra says her version switched that shit up again and made it about a “guitar-playing singer-songwriter.” She says she was disappointed that Gaga and Bradley essentially did the same thing 40 years later, and a modern version probably should have starred “integrated actors” like Will Smith and Beyoncé. via Entertainment Weekly:

“At first, when I heard it was going to be done again, it was supposed to be Will Smith and Beyoncé, and I thought, that’s interesting. Really make it different again, different kind of music, integrated actors, I thought that was a great idea.”

“So, I was surprised when I saw how alike it was to the version that I did in 1976.”

Babs adds that the 2018 movie was obviously a huge hit and she “can’t argue with success.” But in the same breath, she stabs both Gags n’ Brad in their respective necks, adding, “I don’t care so much about success as I do originality.”

Here’s the interview. The A Star is Born talk starts around 4:53:

This probably isn’t a headline Gaga or Bradley expected to see, cuz Babs previously announced she loved the new movie. She also visited the set of the film and gave the 2018 version her blessing. Gaga even said, “She was so, so kind.” Well, there was your first mistake, Gaga. Barbra Streisand is many things: singer, songwriter, actress, director, icon, diva, queen of shade and screen… but I don’t think anyone’s ever described her “so, so kind.” Except maybe her cloned dogs. And the scientists designed them to believe that.
