The 2021 Primetime Emmy Nominations Are Out, And “The Crown” Walked Away With A Whole Bunch

July 13, 2021 / Posted by:

Today is the day that the nominations for the 2021 Primetime Emmy Awards were announced. And if it wasn’t obvious enough by the title above, or that picture of Josh O’Connor as Prince Charles and Emma Corrin being the queen of shy acting as Princess Diana, Netflix’s 100% fictional-slash-totally historically accurate The Crown dominated the nominations today. If you work at either the palaces of Buckingham or Kensington, do everyone a favor by unplugging the WiFi and acting clueless about these nominations. Because anyone with a title probably isn’t going to have a great day after hearing the Diana season just got rewarded with a ton of prestigious American TV award nominations. Or maybe someone could ease the blow by mentioning that the Baby Yoda show got just as many nominations as The Crown? It’s worth a shot!

The 73rd Annual Emmy Awards nominations were announced this morning by the Emmy-winning father-daughter duo of Ron Cephas Jones (from This Is Us) and Jasmine Cephas Jones (from the short form series #FreeRayshawn). There was a time when the Emmy’s capped their nominations at a tight five, but those days are long gone. For a few years now, it’s been like Oprah Winfrey’s favorite things episode, with YOU getting a nomination, and YOU getting a nomination, and a whole bunch for YOU, Ted Lasso! I’m not kidding, there are sixteen television shows nominated between the Outstanding Drama and Outstanding Comedy categories. Do you have a favorite drama or comedy? It probably got nominated. With that being said, it’s nice to see so many nominations, because it means the shows that deserve to get nominated actually get nominated. But never fear, Emily in Paris heads, it got a nomination too. Has anyone seen any jet-lagged Emmy voting committee members walking around with complimentary EiP-branded berets and fresh macaron crumbs on their hands?

As noted by Entertainment Weekly, The Crown and The Mandalorian both nabbed 24 nominations today, with the biggest being nominations for Outstanding Drama Series. The Crown arguably took more acting categories, with multiple nominations for Outstanding Actor and Actress, and Supporting Actor and Actress. WandaVision, Ted Lasso, and The Handmaid’s Tale followed up with numerous nominations of their own. RuPaul should start picking out a nice victory wig, because RuPaul’s Drag Race surprised no one with nominations for Outstanding Reality Competition Series and Outstanding Host. And history was made when Mj Rodriguez became the first ever transgender performer to be nominated in a lead acting category, with an Outstanding Drama Actress nomination for her role as Blanca Rodriguez-Evangelista on Pose.

Of course, there’s bound to be snubs, like Chris Rock in Fargo or Nicole Kidman in The Undoing, or The Undoing riveting everyone with that rich person murder mystery and then getting no nomination for Outstanding Limited Series. But there was also a reverse snub too. Just a couple days after HBO cancelled Lovecraft Country after a single season, it picked up a nomination for Outstanding Drama Series. Quick, HBO – try to make some Lovecraft-ian moves and go back in time to un-cancel it!

The 2021 Emmy Awards are scheduled to happen on September 19th, with a smaller in-person ceremony (guest will be limited to nominees and guests of their choosing). It will be hosted by Cedric the Entertainer, and will likely be just a little bit less of a mess than the 2020 Emmy Awards.
