In an interview with Fatherly, mom-to-be Scarlett Johansson talked about how she’s hanging up her tight black suit and is moving on from playing Black Widow. I see that THEE Stephen Dorff’s comments about how she should be “embarrassed” to be a part of a trash movie like Black Widow got to ScarJo! Or she’s just really bored with making zillions of dollars to be in Marvel movies.
For over ten years, ScarJo has played Black Widow in several Marvel movies including Iron Man 2 in 2010, The Avengers in 2012, Captain America: The Winter Soldier in 2014, Avengers: Age of Ultron in 2015, Captain America: Civil War in 2016, Avengers: Infinity War in 2018, Captain Marvel in 2019 and also Avengers: Endgame the same year. SPOILER ALERT! Black Widow died in Endgame, so Scarlett leaving the franchise should shock no one. Robert Downey Jr., who played Iron Man, also died in the last movie, and Chris Evans’ Captain America aged into an old guy. The remaining OG Avengers crew is now made up of Chris Hemsworth, who’s still making Thor movies, Jeremy Renner, who is doing a Hawkeye series for Disney+, and Mark Ruffalo, who will be in the new She-Hulk show. But ScarJo is out. She said, via UsWeekly:
“I have no plans to return as Natasha. I feel really satisfied with this film. It feels like a great way to go out for this chapter of my Marvel identity.”
She’s not done with Marvel completely, though, she still thinks there are
checks to cash stories to tell:
“I would love to be able to continue to collaborate with Marvel in other ways because I think there’s just an incredible wealth of stories there. Reimagining this genre is something that I find very interesting. I think there’s a lot of opportunities to tell these stories in different ways than audiences have come to expect.”
And Scarlett believes that her legacy as Black Widow will far outlast her character’s actual life-span and she’ll be a role model for children for years to come:
“One of her most admirable attributes is that she’s not afraid to admit when she’s wrong. …I think she’s someone who has a lot of respect for other people. She has a lot of integrity as a person, and I think that makes her a great role model for children and certainly for young girls.”
I’m sure Marvel will want to work with ScarJo again. And by that I mean, when they get ready to cast 50-year-old Jeremy Renner’s mother in the Hawkeye series, their first offer will be to 36-year-old ScarJo. Oh wait, did I say Hawkeye’s mother? I meant Hawkeye’s grandmother!
