Lynne Spears Asked The Court To Let Britney Pick Her Own Lawyer

Seen above in 2015, holding court on an SUV chariot with Britney Spears in a paparazzi pic taken with an overcooked sweet potato, Lynne Spears has once again dipped her toe into Team #FreeBritney. Lynne has piped up and petitioned the court to grant Brit Brit’s wish of choosing her own lawyer to represent her in her fight to finally take a sledgehammer to the ball and chain that is her 13-year conservatorship. Just a couple of days ago, Sam Ingham, Britney’s court-appointed lawyer since 2008, resigned, and so she needs a new attorney. And Lynne has backed up Britney and wants her to have a say in who her next lawyer is. Cut to Britney’s dad, Jamie Spears, putting on a “serious lawyer disguise” (read: Groucho Marx glasses, a very professional-looking clip-on tie, and a jacket pocket full of business cards that read “Justice McLaw, Serious Lawyer”) to try to get Britney to hire him as her new lawyer so he can get another check!

Earlier this week, two important members of Britney’s team checked out. Her manager of 25 years, Larry Rudolph, quit because he claimed that Britney wants to retire so she doesn’t need him anymore. Britney’s lawyer Sam Ingham followed Larry out the exit door. It was reported that Sam resigned because Britney told the court that she never knew she could request to end her conservatorship and Sam claimed he gave her all of her options including petitioning the court to end that shit. In Britney’s statement that she gave to the court on June 23, she asked to pick her own lawyer. Now enter: LYNNE.

During Britney’s 13-year conservatorship, Lynne has mostly laid low, but in 2019, when it became clear that there were big problems in the conservatorship, she asked the court to loop her into Britney’s mental health treatment. Lynne also recently talked to Ronan Farrow and Jia Tolentino for their New Yorker piece on Britney’s conservatorship. Lynne said she had mixed feelings about the whole thing. Lynne never asked to be Britney’s co-conservator in 2008 because she didn’t think the conservatorship would last that long. Now People reports that Lynne filed documents with the court and stated that it’s very important that Britney chooses her own attorney:

“This Motion to Appoint Private Counsel is of the utmost importance and may very well impact each and every of the other requests submitted by Conservatee in her live testimony at the June 23 Hearing,” read the court document obtained by PEOPLE. “It is self-evident that before the Court addresses, for example, the termination of the conservatorship, Conservatee must be allowed to consult with counsel of her choosing.”

Lynne also said that the Britney of today is not like the Britney of 2008. Lynne echoed what Britney told the court on June 23 by saying that she can take care of herself and she’s proved that by continuing to work and making mountains and mountains of money:

In the filing, Lynne described Britney’s appearance and speech in court as “very courageous,” adding that Britney, 39, “is able to care for her person” and also referred to her ability to perform, choreograph and “earn literally hundreds of millions of dollars as an international celebrity.”

“Her capacity is certainly different today than it was in 2008, and Conservatee should no longer be held to the 2008 standard, whereby she was found to ‘not have the capacity to retain counsel,'” the filing read.

Citing Britney’s verbal request to terminate the conservatorship, Lynne wrote that Britney would need her own, private legal counsel.

Lynne thinks Britney should either be able to choose her own lawyer or approve who the court chooses for her.

The Los Angeles court system is keeping busy with processing documents from Britney’s case because Jodi Montgomery has also filed papers. Jodi Montgomery is Britney’s co-conservator, along with Daddy Spears. Jodi is in charge of Britney “the person” and Daddy Spears is in charge of Britney’s money. After Britney called out the conservatorship for being abusive, Jodi claimed she’s been getting death threat after death threat. So Jodi wants Britney’s estate to pay for extra security, which she believes will cost $50,000 A MONTH. TMZ says that Daddy Spears filed his response to Jodi’s request and it’s basically a big ole’ legal LOL. Daddy Spears said that he and other members of the conservatorship have been getting death threats for years and they just deal with it. Daddy Spears adds that if Britney’s estate gives Jodi $50,000 for security, others will ask for money for security too and the estate can’t afford that. This isn’t the first time that Britney’s conservators swatted at each other. Jodi blamed Daddy Spears for why Britney is so unhappy and Daddy Spears blamed Jodi.

Speaking of Britney’s money, her little sister Jamie Lynn Spears is back! After Britney told the court that she wants to sue her entire family for what they’ve put her through, the #FreeBritney movement dragged Jamie Lynn for staying quiet and accused Jamie Lynn of stealing money from Britney. Jamie Lynn denied that and said that she’s always supported her sister and has been paying her own bills since she was a kid. And The New Yorker’s piece claimed that Britney’s father, mother, and brother Bryan have been on her payroll for years. They didn’t mention Jamie Lynn. So Jamie Lynn used that as proof that she doesn’t get a dime from Britney. Jamie Lynn posted a headline from The Daily Mail on her Instagram Stories and channeled Chris Crocker by telling everyone to leave her empty bank account aloooooone:

Broke!?! But the always-truthful internet tells me that she’s worth $6 million. Not to mention that she’s able to afford a cat-killing Tesla! But if Jamie Lynn really is broke, I have a job idea for her. If Jodi Montgomery gets that $50,000 for security, Jamie Lynn should apply to be her lone bodyguard. I’m sure Pita Pit will give her a glowing recommendation since she did do a good job as their unofficial security guard once.
