Lena Dunham Will Write And Direct A “Polly Pocket” Movie Starring Lily Collins

Do you know what’s worse than a remake nobody asked for? Live-action movies about 80s and 90s toys that nobody really remembers too much. Lily Collins of Emily In Paris fame and Lena Dunham of UGH fame are joining forces for a live-action Polly Pocket movie. Lena Dunham will write and direct the movie. So prepare to see Polly Pocket chew on a tiny over-microwaved burrito while sitting on a tiny toilet and bitching to her friend Lila Draper about how adulting is hard.

Variety says that Mattel is cashing in on a lot of toys has lots of projects planned. They are currently working on a Barbie movie, which will star Margot Robbie and will be written by Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach. They’re also working on an American Girl movie, a Barney movie, and a Hot Wheels movie. Up next is a movie about Polly Pocket, the toy from the 80s and 90s. Polly Pocket is an 11-year-old girl who inherits a magical locket that allows her to shrink down and go on teeny tiny adventures with her friends. But Lena is putting a new spin on it, and in her version, a girl will become friends with a pocket-sized woman (probably played by Lily Collins):

The film version of the popular micro-doll line joins a long and intermittently distinguished cadre of toys-to-movies that includes the good (“Transformers,” “The Lego Movie”), the bad (“Max Steel”), and the ugly (“Battleship”). Mattel Films, the film division of the toy company, is working with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) on the movie, as well as with Lena Dunham’s production company Good Thing Going. The film will center on a young girl and a pocket-sized woman who form a friendship.

Lily posted about this news on Instagram:

Lena released a statement to Variety, saying how excited she is:

“Polly Pocket was responsible for countless hours of childhood escapism for me – Polly gave me a tiny world of magic and autonomy to narrate, so it’s pretty poetic to be tackling these same ideas now as a director collaborating with the brilliant Lily Collins, Robbie Brenner, Mattel and MGM… I’m so thrilled to bring to bear both my love of this historic property and also my deep-seated belief that young women need smart playful films that speak to them without condescension.”

Lena also tweeted about how fun it is to be pictured next to a hot girl like Lily. Yes, self-deprecation doesn’t stop ’round Lena, folks!

Why does she actually look like she resisted arrest though? And I’m sure that the pocket woman will give Lily all kinds of helpful advice. From life skills to cleaning hacks, maybe she’ll even teach her about non-intersectional feminism.
