Rachel Zegler Will Be Playing “Snow White” In Disney’s Upcoming Live-Action Remake

Seems like Disney is prepared to make a live-action remake of every single animated movie in their catalog, even the ones nobody really gives two shits about like Snow White. And what better way to elicit shits than to cast Latina newcomer Rachel Zegler in the titular role. According to Deadline, that’s just what they did and now Snow White is that girl on Twitter today with reactions ranging from “YASSSSS!” to “NOOOOO!” to “Imma fuck the jewels right out of Dopey’s eyes!” That’s the internet for you!

Rachel plays Maria in Steven Spielberg‘s West Side Story and doesn’t come out until December. But she’s already having to navigate a barrage of media attention for the second time in her career, which hasn’t even started yet. Deadline reports:

Sources tell Deadline that Zegler is set to star as Snow White in Disney’s live-action adaptation of the film that started it all for the studio’s legendary slate of animated features. Marc Webb will direct, with Marc Platt producing. Production is expected to start in 2022.

“Rachel’s extraordinary vocal abilities are just the beginning of her gifts. Her strength, intelligence and optimism will become an integral part of rediscovering the joy in this classic Disney fairytale,” Webb said.

As for the casting process, Webb and studio execs had been meeting with talent for several months for the role of Snow White. Zegler’s auditions impressed everyone, insiders say, but another factor was footage from West Side Story that blew away the Disney studio brass who’ve seen it, and helped push the decision across the finish line.

Much like Halle Bailey who was cast as Ariel in The Little Mermaid remake before her, Rachel has the unenviable job of having to answer some truly stupid questions. Good thing she already has some practice dealing with lunatics after mobs of, and I can’t believe I’m saying this and that they really exist but, Ansel Elgort FANS came for her, calling her a homewrecker, after she praised him in an Instagram post. Here’s what Rachel had to say about the Snow White news on Twitter.

Yes, I thankfully had the wherewithal to screen capture that tweet because in the time it took me to hit save, it had already been deleted. I guess Disney is happy to court controversy but we aren’t allowed to talk about it. That tactic might not work as well for them when they finally get around to remaking Song of The South starring Morgan Wallen as Uncle Remus. All hell fixin’ ta break loose den!
