Last Thursday HBO Max subscribers received an empty email with the subject: “Integration Test Email”, and a single-sentence message that read, “This template is used by integration tests only.” Huh? Soon the HBO Max Help account tweeted out an apology, explaining that an intern had done a whoopsies. Obviously, Twitter had a chuckle, and soon “Dear Intern” was trending; people shared their own intern fuck ups from back in their day and gave advice to the poor HBO Max intern (and all current interns, really). It was kinda sweet.
But who’s the most famous former intern of all time? THEE Monica Lewinsky. She tweeted, “dear intern: it gets better. <3 ps. don’t wear a beret for awhile, k?” Rather than be amused by the tweet or press the ‘like’ button, or, I dunno, ignore it, a bunch of people accused Monica of dredging up the past, roping Hillary Clinton into the conversation, and making herself out to be the victim. Really, Twitter?
Here’s HBO Max’s original intern tweet:
We mistakenly sent out an empty test email to a portion of our HBO Max mailing list this evening. We apologize for the inconvenience, and as the jokes pile in, yes, it was the intern. No, really. And we’re helping them through it. ❤️

And here’s Monica’s tweet:
it gets better.
ps. don’t wear a beret for awhile, k?

Here are some of the angry responses to Monica’s joke:
I don’t infantilize women. I do not believe grown women cannot consensually date their boss. I believe they should not be coerced/threatened/bribed/pressured/cajoled like what Weinstein did. There was never any evidence BC did that to ML. She claimed she pursued him.

Strikes me as odd that you can be so cavalier about something that got a sitting President impeached. It shouldn’t have, but it did.

You chased a woman’s husband. Get on with your life. Make some new jokes, maybe. 🙄

While Monica’s replies were flooded with this shit, lots of other tweeters defended her. They pointed out that Monica was only 22 when all that shit went down, that she was a victim of Bill Clinton’s, and, actually, berets are super hot right now.
Monica didn’t reply to any of the comments, cuz if she made a habit of responding to online negativity she wouldn’t even have to go to the bathroom. But girl better get used to this resurgence of hate. Ryan Murphy’s Impeachment: American Crime Story is out in September. And Monica’s producing it, which means Beanie Feldstein probably isn’t portraying her as a sneaky little husband stealer. Start exercising those tweeting-fingers, Lewinksy-haters! You’re gonna need all your strength!
