Tyler Perry Is Bringing Madea Out Of Retirement For A New Netflix Movie
On the surface, Tyler Perry might look like the World’s Most Eligible (Confirmed) Bachelor, but underneath that suave exterior lies a man with a burning passion to don a fat suit and a wig. Despite announcing the retirement of his long-running character Madea two years ago, Tyler’s bringing back his billion-dollar cash cow in a new movie for Netflix called A Madea Homecoming. You know what they say, you can take the hip pads and rubber boobies off the man, but you can’t take them out of his soul.
According to Deadline:
Madea is back. Tyler Perry is taking his iconic femme senior character who has grossed over $1 billion at the box office to Netflix with a 12th movie, A Madea Homecoming. A 2022 drop date is planned.
Perry will direct and write with Will Areu and Mark Swinton producing. EPs are Perry and Michelle Sneed.
No plot details yet. Perry reportedly said that Madea would be making her final appearance in the 2019 Lionsgate feature A Madea Family Funeral, which made $75M at the global box office. That’s obviously not the case.
If you’re still asking yourself “why?” look no further than the numeric value follow each “$” above. But according to Variety, it’s only because Tyler can’t figure out how to write anything else that’s (intentionally) funny.
“I was done with Madea, completely done with it,” Perry told Variety, when he was honored as 2020’s Showman of the Year. “But as I’ve been looking at the state of the world — and I finished a tour in January, just before the pandemic started to break in the country — and the amount of joy and laughter that it brought to so many people, that’s what I think is missing. We need that laughter and that joy.”
Tyler posted an announcement about the Return of the Mad (You lied to me. Yes, I cried, yes, I cried cried cried) on Instagram (Oh, my god).
Talk about easy money. Tyler could do Madea in his sleep. In fact, this movie will probably just be footage from his bedroom Nest cam! Rest assured, A Madea Homecoming will be executed with the same level of quality and attention to detail we expect from any great Tyler Perry Production.
