Open Post: Hosted By Lil Nas X Swearing That His Wardrobe Malfunction On “Saturday Night Live” Wasn’t Planned

Lil Nas X was the final musical guest of Saturday Night Live’s 46th season, and he performed “Montero (Call Me By Your Name).”  Lil Nas X learned just how live Saturday Night Live was when he split the crotch of his pants right before his big pole routine. Some people watching at home might have thought Lil Nas X really wanted to go as far as possible with the stripper imagery as possible, and was trying to pull a Lenny Kravitz on purpose. But he swears a surprise peek-a-boo penis was never part of the plan.

Towards the end of the performance, Lil Nas X approaches the stripper pole that’s been set up on stage and begins what appears to be a choreographed pole dance. And at the 2:23 mark in the video below, a shocked Lil Nas X has a clear moment of hesitation and he chooses instead to simply stand with his back against the pole, while his left-hand covers his junk.

Lil Nas X appeared on The Tonight Show last night, and he told Jimmy Fallon and Tonight Show co-host Dave Grohl that people can stop speculating about whether or not that busted crotch seam was orchestrated because it most certainly was not. via TooFab:

“I was doing my little sexy drop down and, boom, I feel air. I was like, ‘There’s definitely a breeze going on.’ And I also feel some popping still happening while i was down there. So I was like, ‘God, I hope it’s not – please don’t be on TV already.’ And SNL is actually live. You know what the worst part is? At the end of the performance, the dancers are supposed to touch me and tug on me or whatever, and they were tugging on the pants, and I was like, ‘Please, God, no.’..I want everybody who thought it was a publicity stunt to see that. It was not. I would never rip my pants in public on purpose.”

To prove he wasn’t planning it, Jimmy Fallon played a clip of what was supposed to happen, had the stitching on Lil Nas X’s pants not decided to quit in the middle of his performance. Every episode of SNL has a full run-through a couple of hours before the show goes live, and they always tape it, just in case something goes really wrong during the live show, and they need to sub-in one of the dress rehearsal sketches later (like when they re-air episodes). At the 4:06 mark, Jimmy plays a clip from the rehearsal, and you can see that Lil Nas X was supposed to spin backward and upside-down on the pole, anchored by one of his legs:

Obviously, Lil Nas X couldn’t have executed a move that required him to be ass-up and crotch-out, so he had to scrap it. Hopefully, he’ll get another chance to perform that move, because you know that kind of artistry takes a ton of practice, and you’d hate to see it go to waste. I think that clip can also put to rest any outstanding suspicions that he popped his pants on purpose. Lil Nas X is a showman of the highest order. If he wanted those pants to come open, he also would have made sure to cover his business in a glittery rhinestone-studded G-string that spelled out Lil Nas-ty.
