Drew Barrymore Is The Latest Person To Regret Working With Woody Allen

Woody Allen is in the news again. I’m sure that delusional creep probably thinks it’s good press, like that he made the #2 spot on a BuzzFeed list titled: 26 of the Hottest Over-80 Directors in Sloppy Ill-Fitting Corduroy Pants. But it’s the same reason why Woody Allen’s name usually shows up, which is that there is yet another famous actor who has publicly acknowledged that they really don’t feel great about having worked with him in the past. This time it’s Drew Barrymore, who not only regrets working with Woody but says she now realizes she was gaslit into it.

On yesterday’s episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, Drew’s guest was Woody’s daughter and accuser Dylan Farrow, who was there to discuss the HBO docuseries Allen v. Farrow, as well as the YA novel she wrote last year. Right at the top of the interview, Drew addressed an elephant in the room that likely a bunch of people watching at home wouldn’t have even noticed. Back in 1996, Drew starred in Woody’s musical comedy Everyone Says I Love You. I personally forgot that Drew was in Everyone Says I Love You, but that’s probably because it came out the same year as Scream, and let’s be perfectly honest here – I doubt it’s too bold to suggest that Scream is the better, more memorable film. But Drew was in Woody’s movie and chose to work with him four years after Dylan’s allegations were first made public, in 1992. That’s a little different than agreeing to star in a Woody Allen film in, oh, let’s say – any time after 2014. But not to Drew. She did it, and she let Dylan know that she did so because she was encouraged to only educate herself with one side of the story. via The Hollywood Reporter:

“I worked with Woody Allen. I did a film with him in 1996 called, Everyone Says I Love You, and there was no higher career calling card than to work with Woody Allen,” Barrymore told Farrow about the disgraced Hollywood director, Farrow’s adoptive father, and co-starring in the New York-set film among an A-list cast. “Then I had children, and it changed me because I realized that I was one of the people who was basically gaslit into not looking at a narrative beyond what I was being told. And I see what is happening in the industry now and that is because of you making that brave choice. So thank you for that.”

Drew joins a long list of people who have spoken out against Woody, including Kate Winslet, Mira Sorvino, Colin Firth, Rebecca Hall, Timothée Chalamet, Chloe Sevigny, and Greta Gerwig. I’m sure Drew won’t be the last, either. Of course, there are still actors that are firmly on Team Woody, but that’s not exactly the coolest table in the cafeteria. And sure, Drew could have done her own research, like picking up a November 1992 copy of Vanity Fair. But she didn’t, and now all she can do is take accountability. But I’m sure she couldn’t have predicted this kind of future back in 1996. Imagine going back in time and telling Drew that 25 years in the future, she’ll be embarrassed to have worked with one A-list Hollywood guy, and in a wild turn of events, it won’t be Adam Sandler. “That’s right, your working relationship with the star of Happy Gilmore will actually end up being a charming three-time addition to your expansive career!
