Tiffany Haddish Is Reportedly The #1 Choice To Take Over After Ellen DeGeneres Leaves Daytime
It’s been just over 24 hours since Ellen DeGeneres formally announced that she’s ending her talk show Ellen in 2022, due to it no longer being a challenge for her. Which shocked me, because I can’t think of a greater challenge than trying to look interested during an eleven-minute small talk segment with a Kardashian. Even so, Ellen is moving on. But who will sneak into her lucrative time slot and capitalize on all those lost viewers? The ice hasn’t even begun to thaw around the Ellen set yet, and there’s already talk that Tiffany Haddish is being looked at as Ellen’s replacement.
No one can technically jump into Ellen’s chair and take over; she owns the rights to her show, so when Ellen leaves in 2022, Ellen is officially done. But what NBCUniversal can do is make sure they don’t replace her with an hour of programming that no one is that interested in watching. You know, like Ellen. Page Six says they spoke to a higher-up at NBCUniversal, and they claim that Tiffany Haddish is their number one choice for taking over where Ellen left off. Tiffany has filled in for Ellen several times, so she’s familiar with a talk show format. Tiffany also hosts Kids Say the Darndest Things, which means she already knows how to keep it PG for the afternoon audience. via Page Six:
“Tiffany is a favorite, she has humor and empathy in spades. She’s top of the list to get a daytime show – she’s a fresh voice.”
Humor and empathy, eh? Hmm…I wonder why that’s something NBC would be looking for in Ellen’s replacement. No really, I wonder since Ellen has recently claimed all those allegations of being a cruel monster were some kind of diabolical plot to bring down a successful female media mogul. Maybe Ellen could pass on her official kindness handbook for whoever comes in and replaces her. Is the handbook just a single sheet of paper that says “IF YOU ARE READING THIS, YOU ARE TOO CLOSE TO ELLEN. CONSIDER YOURSELF TERMINATED“? It might be! Of course, there is a chance that if Tiffany gets a talk show, it might not air in Ellen’s old time slot. Many sources have said that Kelly Clarkson, whose show airs right after Ellen, is being considered to move into the vacant slot, especially since Kelly’s numbers have been as good as Ellen’s in recent months.
It won’t be that much of a surprise if it’s announced that Tiffany is getting a talk show, since Ellen started in stand-up comedy, and that’s where Tiffany comes from as well. Also, a lot of people like Tiffany Haddish, and she’s got good TV talk show host energy. But maybe instead of a ride-or-die DJ like Ellen had, Tiffany could have a trusty scientist sidekick who sits off to the right, with a stack of medical journals and access to MIT’s online library. Just someone who could quickly fact-check Tiffany’s thoughts on the spot, to prevent anyone at home from trusting her as a valid source of medical information.
