“Another Round” Is Being Remade In English, And It Might Star Leonardo DiCaprio

Because some people have no interest in overcoming subtitles and you can almost always count on English dubbing to end up looking a mess, Hollywood continues to remake successful non-English movies with English-speaking actors, to varying degrees of moderate success or abject failure. So no one should be that surprised that Hollywood bought the remake rights to the very successful and Oscar-winning Danish comedy-drama Another Round. But the shock here should be reserved for the fact that they’re not letting Mads Mikkelsen come back and do it all over again, but that it sounds like Leonardo DiCaprio will take his place.

Another Round was released last September and ended up being nominated for two Oscars this year. It won the Oscar for Best International Feature Film. I’m pretty sure the second a film wins Best International Feature at the Oscars, Hollywood’s ears start ringing with ka-ching ka-ching cash registers sounds, and they get to work on the American adaptation before the director says their final “thank you.” But this English language remake of Another Round was reportedly in the works for at least two weeks before it won an Oscar. Deadline says that plenty of people wanted to buy the remake rights to it, like Elizabeth Banks’ production company, or Jake Gyllenhaal’s company. But according to Deadline, the company that won the auction for the English-language remake rights was Appian Way, aka Leonardo DiCaprio’s production company. And he might have won the rights because Another Round’s director Thomas Vinterberg allegedly wanted to see a drunk middle-aged Leo.

English-language remake rights to Thomas Vinterberg’s Best International Film Oscar winner Another Round have been acquired after an auction. The film will be developed as a potential star vehicle for Leonardo DiCaprio and was won in a bid by his and Jennifer Davisson’s Appian Way, Endeavor Content and Brad Weston’s Makeready. The film will be fully funded by Endeavor Content and Makeready.

This was a hotly sought-after project, even before the film won the Oscar in Sunday night’s ceremony at Union Station. The difference maker here to Vinterberg was the chance to see DiCaprio in a new role, the vulnerable middle-aged man in existential crisis played by Mads Mikkelsen.

It’s not confirmed that Leo will play the main character, Martin. He could just end up producing it. Appian Way Productions has produced several films that don’t even have so much as a Leo cameo, so he could pass this one off to someone else. Again, Mads is right there. Offer it to him! We could always use more Mads Mikkelsen.

For those who haven’t seen it, Another Round is about four 40-something friends who decide to add some zip to their lives by micro-dosing alcohol (they get motivated to do it after reading a study that hypothesized that having a minimum blood alcohol content level of 0.05 makes you more creative and relaxed). Leonardo DiCaprio is 46, so he could easily play the main character. Plus, he could conveniently pad out the rest of the cast with his best friends, Lukas Haas, Tobey Maguire, and Kevin Connolly. And maybe he’ll make a few tweaks to the script, you know, just to reflect his personal ideas of friendship and male bonding. Like instead of drinking booze, they can cruise nightclubs for coochie until someone finally admits they have a problem. Another Pound, in theaters next Christmas.
