Open Post: Hosted By The Teaser Trailer For Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story”
I feel like we’ve been hearing about Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story adaptation for the better part of this millennium. After being pushed back a full year cuz of the pandemic, the movie is set to be released on December 10. And during last night’s Oscars, the trailer finally dropped! And this shit’s got it all: Ansel Elgort’s spectacularly punchable face, newcomer Rachel Zegler as Maria, lots of dancing, dance-fighting, 50s sets and costumes, the triumphant return of Rita Moreno, and Ansel Elgort’s spectacularly punchable face. Oh, did I repeat myself? Apologies. It’s just so… dang… punchable. I have to keep taking breaks from writing because my hands are involuntarily curling up into fists! That is the power of Ansel.
Here’s the trailer.
I am such an easy mark. I didn’t give a rip about this adaptation, but gimme a trailer with fast visuals and Rita singing “Somewhere”, and suddenly I’m marking my calendar for December 10. Absolutely pathetic behavior.
Last night 89-year-old Rita was at the Oscars as a presenter, and in a red carpet interview she revealed she’s seen the movie already, and it is “thrilling.” She said, “Oh my god, Spielberg’s such a movie maker!”
The comments on the YouTube video also seem positive, and a bunch of people are like, “OMG, GIVE RACHEL ZEGLER THE OSCAR!!!” If you want a sneak peek of Rachel’s talents, here she is performing “Tonight” in her high school production of West Side Story:
Now, just imagine Ansel Elgort duetting with this bright young talent. Ruins it, non? Still not too late to do a post-production deep-fake on his face, Spielberg. Let’s go with… I dunno, Chalamet? Sure.
