Prince Philip Has Been Laid To Rest

A week after Prince Philip, THE QUEEN’s husband and companion of 73 years, died at 99, he was laid to rest in St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle. And well, I should’ve expected this, but I caught a case of the sad feelings in the heart area from seeing THE QUEEN sitting all alone inside the chapel. Couldn’t someone have soothed the sads a bit by handing her one of her new Corgi puppies, all dressed in mourning black?!

Before the funeral service, there was a royal procession to the chapel that was paired down because of the pandemic, and also because Philip didn’t want a big, fussy, grand funeral. Philip’s coffin was carried in a custom-made Land Rover hearse that he himself picked out 18 years ago. Philip reportedly once told THE QUEEN, “Just stick me in the back of a Land Rover and drive me to Windsor!” So he got his wish. Queen Elizabeth and Philip’s children, Princess Anne, Prince Charles, Prince Edward, and Prince Andrew walked behind their father’s coffin, and behind them were Prince William and Prince Harry. William and Harry didn’t walk side-by-side and were separated by their cousin Peter Phillips. When the palace announced earlier this week that William and Harry weren’t going to walk side-by-side, people figured that’s because the Royal Family didn’t want those FEUDING BROTHERS to start brawling in the middle of the procession. But a rep for Buckingham Palace said that the decision is “a practical change rather than sending a signal” and “this is a funeral and we are not going to be drawn into perceptions of drama.” The image of William and Harry walking behind their grandpa’s coffin also gave people sad flashbacks to them walking behind their mother Princess Diana’s coffin in 1997.

Another one of THE QUEEN’s wishes was for the members of the Royal Family to wear morning suits instead of their uniforms. But they did wear their military medals.

Queen Elizabeth and her lady-in-waiting, Lady Susan Hussey, followed the procession in her State Bentley.

Only 30 mourners were allowed inside the chapel, and they all had to wear masks and were seated apart from each other. William sat with Duchess Kate because they’re in a quarantine bubble together. Harry sat alone because as we know, Meghan Markle is too pregnant to fly and stayed at home in California. But Meghan watched the funeral from a special feed while at home in California, and she also sent a handwritten note and a wreath.

As for the service, there was no sermon because that’s what Philip wanted. via AP:

The service began with Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby entering the chapel ahead of the coffin, followed by Philip’s children and three of his eight grandchildren, as a four-member, socially distanced choir sang “I am the resurrection and the life.”

There was no sermon, at Philip’s request, and no family eulogies or readings, in keeping with royal tradition. But Dean of Windsor David Conner said the country had been enriched by Philip’s “unwavering loyalty to our queen, by his service to the nation and the Commonwealth, by his courage, fortitude and faith.”

None of the members of the Royal Family spoke at Philip’s funeral. And as I mentioned above, Queen Elizabeth sat alone as she said goodbye to her husband:

Philip’s coffin was lowered into the Royal Vault underneath the Quire at St. George’s Chapel, but that won’t be his final resting place. When THE QUEEN passes, Philip’s coffin will be moved to the vault in the King George VI Memorial Chapel so he can be with her.

After the funeral, Harry walked out of the chapel with Kate and William and had a little chat:

I’m sure that every British tabloid hired several body language experts to analyze every little movement they made as they talked. And I’m also sure that as I type this, expert lip readers are trying to figure out what came out of William’s mask-less mouth while walking with his brother. But I bet more people were focused on watching Prince Andrew to see if the authorities would finally tackle him and arrest him in front of the cameras.

And hopefully, THE QUEEN is now surrounded by her Corgi puppies and lots and lots of gin.
