Dr. Oz Allegedly Made Fun Of A “Jeopardy!” Contestant During His Stint As Guest Host

When Alex Trebek died five months ago, he left more than a hole in our hearts. He also left a vacancy at the Jeopardy! host podium that has yet to be permanently filled. Since Alex’s final episode back in January, there has been a revolving door of guest hosts, including Ken Jennings and Aaron Rodgers. But there was one guest host a whole lot of people didn’t want to see, and that was daytime TV talk show personality and dubious medical advice pusher Dr. Mehmet Oz. Several former Jeopardy! contestants wrote a letter asking producers to reconsider Dr. Oz as a guest host. At the time, I thought, “Yeah, I don’t want to see him host either, but how bad could it really be?” As it turns out, Dr. Oz might not have been the best choice, even if the cameras weren’t rolling for the viewers at home.

Recent Jeopardy! winner Emily Seaman spoke to The Ringer and spilled what it was like to answer the clues presented by Dr. Oz, who she learned would be the day’s host when she arrived on set. Emily, who couldn’t remember if Dr. Oz was a real doctor, because in her words, “I always mix him up with Dr. Drew.” Emily spent a few days filming with Dr. Oz, who hosted from March 22 to April 2. And it wasn’t a good experience. via The Ringer:

Seaman recalls Final Jeopardy! of her second game, which, under the category “Antidisestablishmentarianism,” asked, “A real-life antidisestablishmentarian, William Bridgeman opposed the 1920 disestablishment of this in Wales.” Oz struggled to get the pronunciation of antidisestablishmentarianism right, rerecording “seven or eight times,” Seaman says. “He just couldn’t get it. And more than that he couldn’t get it, he didn’t know when he hadn’t gotten it, so it kind of seemed like the producers were like, Are you gonna tell him that we’ve done this six times and he didn’t get it? Everybody in the audience” – the day’s other contestants – “was like, That’s not how you say that…”

Dr. Oz is probably thinking, “Can you blame me for not being able to read a word? I can’t even read the room!” Then Dr. Oz allegedly went backstage and made fun of an incorrect answer that Emily gave. via The New York Post:

“It was just odd…I don’t think he likes Jeopardy!

Seaman, a law clerk for the federal Southern District of Texas court, claims she overheard Oz making her the butt of a joke when she failed to answer a question after successfully blazing through the entire category during gameplay.

“I heard him making fun of it to one of the producers. Like, ‘I can’t believe they didn’t get this one.’ I was, like, ‘Cool, bro – let’s see you do this.'”

Emily adds that she thought Dr. Oz was a quack before the episodes started airing, but that she chose not to protest his participation because she knew she’d never get a callback to be on the show.

Dr. Oz probably won’t be getting a callback from the producers of Jeopardy! any time soon. And would he answer the call? There’s a never-ending stream of weight loss scams that need promoting, so it’s not like he’s sitting at home with nothing to do. But if what Emily is saying is true, then Dr. Oz should hang his head in shame. Roasting contestants behind their back? You, sir, are no Jeopardy! host. Alex Trebek at least had the guts to do it to their face.
