This Year’s Met Gala Is Still Happening And Will Be Held In September
The Met Gala will return this year, like a golden fashion-phoenix from the germ-infested ashes of 2020 (see: above photo). Last year’s event (the theme was “time”) was obviously canceled cuz of the pandemic, and Billy Porter and Vogue’s at-home #MetGalaChallenge on Instagram just wasn’t the same. This year’s theme will be a celebration of American and American designers and will be co-hosted by poet Amanda Gorman and probably Tom Ford (he’s been approached). And no, that shit won’t be the first Monday in May like usual. The event’s been pushed to September 13, in the hopes that the world will be back to “normal” by then.
A source told Page Six that the Met Gala won’t be the first Monday of September because that’s Labor Day. They added, “Even Anna Wintour can’t change a federal holiday.” But you know she tried. “Lay-bore? Isn’t that what my assistants do? Hmph, the last thing they need is a day off to stuff their faces with bonbons.”
Today Anne and Andrew Bolton, the curator in charge of the Costume Institute of the Met, unveiled their plans for two Met shows, both focused on American fashion. And both will have Met Galas; the one in September, and the next in May 2022. The New York Times says:
Two Met Galas! That’s doubling down on the local scene. And a big gamble that the world will be prepared to embrace a party, and the party throwers, at a time when exactly how safe that party will be is still unclear.
As if this pandemic ever stopped the rich and famous from partying.
Andrew Bolton says that he wants the galas to be a celebration of the American fashion community, “which suffered so much during the pandemic.” He added that they want to shed a light on American fashion:
He believes, he said, that it had often been unfairly dismissed because of its historic associations with “sportswear and the related values of utility, functionality and pragmatism,” while European fashion was considered full of “expression and emotion.”
Blegh, sportswear? Functionality? Wash your mouth out with fashion-soap, Andrew Bolton!
Since the theme is America, a bunch of celebs will likely wrap themselves in couture versions of the American flag. Someone will be the Statue of Liberty (Billy Porter?), and a few will get political. Finally, Katy Perry will dress up as a sexy pilgrim. I have a crystal-clear image of this in my head. I’d be willing to put money on it.
