A “Magic Mike” Reality Competition Show Is In The Works
Good news for people who get horned up watching ripped dudes tear of their clothes and hump the air: HBO Max has ordered The Real Magic Mike, a reality competition from the producers of the Magic Mike movies, including Channing Tatum and Steven Soderbergh. Ten contestants will fight to win a spot in the Magic Mike Live show in Las Vegas. Magic Mike Live is a strip revue, a la Chippendales. Don’t get it confused with the Magic Mike Broadway musical that imploded back in 2019. Magic Mike, Magic Mike, Magic Mike!
The show’s logline is “they will bare their souls and more as they evolve their bodies,” as they learn their routines and “develop a new level of self-confidence.” They are currently casting, and the Magic Mike Live site has a form where fans can nominate someone for the show:
Know a dad who’s always first to hit the dance floor? A friend with an unfulfilled dancer dream? A man who wants his mojo back?
I mean, just off the top of my head: my own father, Napoleon Dynamite, and Austin Powers in The Spy Who Shagged Me.
Sarah Aubrey, the head of original content at HBO Max, says she’s excited to celebrate “self-confidence and sexiness both inside and out.” But, um… mostly “out”, right? Cuz this is Magic Mike we’re talking about. And even though the whole mega-muscle/rock-hard abs thing doesn’t appeal to my libido (Team Soft Nerd for life), the beefcake look is the main reason all the horn dogs went to see Magic Mike in theatres back in 2012. Remember your audience, HBO Max!
