Regé-Jean Page Talked More About Leaving “Bridgerton” After One Season

It was announced last week that the super-hot Duke from the Netflix romance series which everyone went ballistic over, Bridgerton, will not be in its second season. Even though the show was viewed by every living human (real number: 82 million households), it was announced that Regé-Jean Page is moving on to other projects and will not return to the show. That wail you heard was the collective displeasure of millions of pent-up horny folk. But this was always Regé-Jean’s master plan. He revealed that Bridgerton is sort of like an anthology series and he was drawn to the show because it was a one-and-done type of project. Sorry horny folk looking for some romance novel butt-thrusting, if you wanna fap to the Duke of Hastings you’re stuck with season one.

31-year-old Regé-Jean tells Variety that his character was always meant for just one season, and he’s fine with that. When the producers of Shondaland started to talk him about doing Bridgerton, he had just come off of a two-season show and liked the idea of a quickie:

“It’s a one-season arc. It’s going to have a beginning, middle, end–give us a year,” Page says, recounting early conversations with Shondaland producers, who approached him about the role of Simon after For the People wrapped up. “[I thought] “That’s interesting,” because then it felt like a limited series. I get to come in, I get to contribute my bit and then the Bridgerton family rolls on.

One of the things that is different about this [romance] genre is that the audience knows the arc completes. They come in knowing that, so you can tie people in emotional knots because they have that reassurance that we’re going to come out and we’re going to have the marriage and the baby.”

But he’s still excited for everything to come in Bridgerton season two and wishes them the best.

“I have nothing but excitement for Bridgerton continuing to steam train off and conquer the globe. But there is also value in completing these arcs and sticking the landing.”

Regé-Jean’s onscreen wife, Phoebe Dynevor, is going to be in the second season of the show. So it feels like Regé-Jean’s exit translates to: “I became one of the biggest stars in the world and now I’m gonna go do bigger shit.” This seems to be the case, because he’s going to be in The Gray Man by the Russo Brothers which also stars Ana De Armas and Chris Evans, and he’s been announced to be in the upcoming Dungeons & Dragons movie. There’s also a rumor that he’s in the running to be the new James Bond. So enjoy that career boost, Regé-Jean! Hopefully, it works out better for him dipping from the show which made him famous than it did for Katherine Heigl.
