The Release Of “Death On The Nile” Has Been Pushed To 2022

We’ve had a whole year’s worth of headlines about movie releases getting pushed back and other films getting dumped onto the most relevant streaming service, all due to COVID-19. And while some movie theaters are beginning to open back up, the movie-going industry is still messier than the reviews of Doolittle. So it shouldn’t shock anyone that the release of Death on the Nile, the follow-up to 2017’s Murder on the Orient Express, has been moved again, this time to February 11, 2022. Oh, did I forget to mention that Death on the Nile stars Armie Hammer? Hmmm…I wonder why they suddenly decided to wait a whole year before releasing this movie? Interesting.

Death on the Nile was originally supposed to drop in theaters in 2019, then it was pushed to October 9th 2020, then October 23rd 2020, then finally to December 18th 2020. Now it’s not coming out until next year. And just like the rest of us, Deadline wonders if DOTN’s sudden delay has anything to do with the abuse and rape allegations against Armie Hammer. But sources claim that’s not the case. via Deadline:

I’m told the release date has nothing to do with Hammer…That said, the new date provides Disney with close to a year in regard to rethinking any form of its marketing campaign, that is if the movie sticks to its theatrical date.

Armie Hammer doesn’t have a talent agent or a publicist at the moment, and he has vanished from two upcoming projects (Shotgun Wedding with Jennifer Lopez, and The Offer, about the making of The Godfather). He’s currently under investigation for rape by the LAPD.

Death on the Nile is one of those movies where there’s about six dozen characters, and if Armie had a smaller role, it might be easy to give him the Sherry Pie edit. But he’s one of the main characters. And no one at Disney is frantically calling Josh Duhamel and asking how soon he can grow out a 1920s mustache, either. Sources say that Armie’s role won’t be recast, Christopher Plummer-style. Because the cast is so huge, and because Armie’s character is so pivotal to the story, it would take forever to call everyone back and re-shoot his scenes.

I don’t know what Disney plans on doing here, but this is already turning out to be a huge mess. Because if you’re familiar with the plot of Death on the Nile, then you know this is a PR nightmare. Armie plays the shady and charismatic Simon Doyle, whose wife is (SPOILER) murdered, and the suspect is (SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER) Simon, who was been cheating on his wife. Simon then (SPOIIIIIIILER) intentionally injures himself to avoid suspicion from Hercule Poirot. The only solution to this problem is to add a warning at the beginning that reads: “Hercule Poirot isn’t familiar with the current news cycle, so please act surprised when Simon is revealed to be guilty.
