Ellen DeGeneres Signed A Multi-Year Deal With The Discovery Channel And Discovery+

There have been persistent rumors and not-very-subtle implications that Ellen DeGeneres’ daytime TV show Ellen isn’t exactly doing great, ratings-wise. Which has got to be scary for Ellen, because – oh no! – what will Ellen do if she’s not on TV, lobbing softball questions at the likes of various Kardashians and Jenners? She’d practically be first in line to the poor house, with her hand outstretched, clutching a small tin can, appealing to the benevolence of passers-by, begging: “Alms, alms for the Portia de Rossi.” That’s surely what would happen if it were not for the generous souls at Discovery, who just provided Ellen with the safety net of a lifetime by signing her to a multi-year contract with the Discovery Channel and their streaming platform, Discovery+.

It was revealed earlier today that Ellen’s contract would include producing natural history content across both platforms and that she’d be developing and producing specials, multiple series, documentaries, all through her production company, A Very Good Production. That sounds like a ton of content. Hey, just so long as it doesn’t cut into my precious Shark Week. Ellen, so help me if all your shows and documentaries reduce it down to Shark Day-And-A-Half.

Ellen has already reportedly started work on her first Discovery project, which will drop on Earth Day. via Deadline:

The first project under the deal is Endangered. DeGeneres will narrate and executive produce the documentary from Discovery and the BBC Natural History Unit, which will begin streaming on Earth Day, April 22, on Discovery+.

Endangered marks the first time DeGeneres has narrated a documentary as well as the BBC Studios Natural History Unit’s first non-BBC commission. It follows the effort of dedicated wildlife conservationists across the globe as they work to compile the latest version of The Red List – the most comprehensive record of the state of the world’s wildlife that has ever been created.

For anyone confused at home, Endangered is a documentary, whereas “In danger” is where some of Ellen’s employees have allegedly found themselves when they showed up to work. Although I’m sure if you ask some of them, they might suggest that Ellen is probably only losing sleep over the fate of the animals.

Ellen had this to say about her new deal with the Discovery family, complete with an implied dick joke:

“I’m so excited to partner with Discovery. I’ll get to discover all kinds of things about incredible animals. For instance, did you know the Ring-tailed lemur’s tail is longer than its body? I think that’s his tail. I hope that’s his tail. I have so much to discover with Discovery.”

This partnership does make sense because Ellen is an animal lover. At one time, Ellen was vegan (although she eats fish and eggs now), and she’s got a gorilla-rescuing wildlife charity that she’s very dedicated to. She loves animals so much, she’s been known to give them away as gifts! Plus, it’s great for the animals featured on the Discovery Channel and Discovery+. Just think of how happy all those terrifying 6-inch-wide Australian spiders are about this. “Finally, we’re not the scariest ones on Discovery!
