Will Smith Said He Wouldn’t Rule Out Running For Office Someday
I blame Ronald Reagan for blurring the line between politics and Hollywood. Pissed about your last reality TV host President? With Kanye West? Arnold Schwarzenegger? Take it up with the Gipper! And they just keep coming. A couple of weeks ago, The Rock said he would consider running for office (if the people wanted it), and now Will Smith has shared he wouldn’t rule out a political career. He dropped this info while co-hosting yesterday’s Pod Save America with Jon Favreau.
The topic was broached when Will and Jon were discussing systemic racism. Will says he’s been called the n-word to his face around 5-6 times in his life. He added (via The Hollywood Reporter)::
And fortunately for my psyche, I’ve never been called [n-word] by a smart person,” Smith replied. “I grew up with the impression that racists and racism were stupid, and they were easy to get around. I just had to be smarter now while they were very dangerous. I had never looked into the eyes of a racist and saw anything that I perceived as intellect.”
Will went on to say that once he hit Hollywood, he started seeing systemic racism around him:
“But at the core of it, I noticed a difference between ignorance and evil. Now they’re twins, for sure, but ignorance, can be educated and evil is a much more difficult problem. I’ve always been encouraged that the process of education and understanding could alleviate some of the more dangerous and difficult aspects of racism that have unfortunately been embedded in the very fibers of our country.”
Jon then asked Will if he’d ever consider getting into politics. I guess this is something he has joked about doing before. Will replied:
“I think for now I’ll let that office get cleaned up a little bit and then I’ll consider that at some point down the line,” he said. “I absolutely have an opinion, I’m optimistic, I’m hopeful, I believe in understanding between people and I believe in the possibility of harmony. I will certainly do my part, whether it remains artistic or, at some point, ventures into the political arena.”
So… yes? Maybe? No? Hey, if the Fresh Prince can make peace with original Aunt Viv Janet Hubert, maybe he actually possesses some politicking potential. And say it with me: First Lady Jada Pinkett Smith. Has a nice ring to it, right? If all the crooked pieces of shit in Washington were made to face Gammy on a Red Table Talk, maybe the world would be a better place?
