Jane Fonda Called On Hollywood To Be More Inclusive In Her Golden Globes Acceptance Speech

Last night’s Golden Globes were filled with more glitches and technical fuck-ups than a FaceTime call with my mom (and yes, every other question from her is, “Can you see me?!“), but the real technical glitch happened when all of the lights burst (yes, that happened, don’t fact check me on that) after lighting rod of glamour, Jane Fonda, strutted her 83-year-old ass out onto the stage. Jane was done up like the hot Mother of the Bride who makes the bride seethe with rage by looking better than her on her big day. But Jane was at the Golden Globes in Beverly Hills to accept the Cecil B. DeMille Award and during her speech, she called out Hollywood and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s problems with diversity and gave love to I May Destroy You, a show that makes HFPA members say, “I don’t know her,” because they snubbed the hell out of it.

Jane Fonda’s legendary 60-plus year career was honored at last night’s GGs, and while I’m sure she could’ve spent her time at the mic talking about some of her masterpieces like 9 to 5 and Barbarella, she instead talked less about herself and more about the importance of diversity in the TV and movie industry. As Kristian mentioned earlier, the HFPA was called out for not having one single Black member in its 90-person voting pool. And during her speech, Jane gave love to some of the diverse stories that were told onscreen (Small Axe, Judas and the Black Messiah, Minari, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, I May Destroy You, and Ramy) and called on Hollywood to be more inclusive, via CNN:

But there’s a story we’ve been afraid to see and hear about ourselves in this industry. A story about which voices we respect and elevate — and which we tune out.
A story about who’s offered a seat at the table and who is kept out of the rooms where decisions are made.

So let’s all of us — including all the groups that decide who gets hired and what gets made and who wins awards — let’s all of us make an effort to expand that tent. So that everyone rises and everyone’s story has a chance to be seen and heard.

I mean, doing this simply means acknowledging what’s true. Being in step with the emerging diversity that’s happening because of all those who marched and fought in the past and those who’ve picked up the baton today.

After all, art has always been not just in step with history, but has led the way.

Jane also wore a suit from her closet because she vowed a couple of years ago to never buy new clothes again in the name of sustainability and excessive consumerism.

Here’s Jane’s speech which features cameo appearances by Jodie Foster and her wife Alexandra Hedison’s pooch and Glenn Close who looks like me when the right edible hits and it’s smoooooooth:

All the slow claps for Jane’s speech, but one of my favorite parts was the grand finale. Yesterday was February 28, which was the 82nd birthday of Broadway legend Tommy Tune, so Jane ended her speech with, “Happy Birthday, Tommy Tune!” From here on out, anybody who wins any award needs to end their speech with, “Happy Birthday, Tommy Tune!”, even if it’s not Tommy Tune’s birthday! If they don’t, they need to get their award taken away. That needs to be the new rule!
