The 2021 SAG Award Nominations Made Up For All The Golden Globe Award Snubs

February 4, 2021 / Posted by:

The Golden Globe nominations were announced yesterday and there were snubs galore and shows, like Emily In Paris, that many thought deserved nothing, got nominated. The Screen Actors Guild is getting about 800% better press today, because they released their nominations for the 2021 SAG Awards, and guess what? Objective justice was done, and not nearly as many obvious snubs happened. Actually, that’s not true. There’s one very obvious snub, or should I say snubé. That’s right, Emily in Paris got, how you say, pas de nominations. Ah, c’est la vie – there’s always the Golden Globes.

One of the more shocking snubs that came out of yesterday’s Golden Globe nominations was the fact that Michaela Coel, creator and star of I May Destroy You, got no recognition. The SAG Awards are all about acting, and so they clearly did care about Michaela’s performance, which is why she received a SAG Award nomination for Female Actor in a Television Movie or Limited Series. Bridgerton, another series that got tossed in the metaphorical chamberpot by the GGs, received two SAG Award nominations today. Da 5 Bloods, which got 0 nominations from the HFPA yesterday, saw three acting nominations.

Speaking of Da 5 Bloods, the late Chadwick Boseman received a Male Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture SAG Award nomination for his role in the film, which would be one of four nominations given to Chadwick today. Chadwick made history as the first actor to receive four SAG Award nominations in a single year. Chadwick was nominated for:

Male Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture (Da 5 Bloods)
Male Actor in a Leading Role in a Motion Picture (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom)
Cast in a Motion Picture (Da 5 Bloods)
Cast in a Motion Picture (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom)

Naturally, there were some nominations that likely came as no surprise, unless you’ve spent the past 11 months with The Mandalorian on a repetitive loop because Baby Yoda’s adorable face is the only thing you can emotionally handle (I get it). The Crown, which cleaned up at the GGs, got five SAG nominations. To be fair, the wigs and wardrobe do most of the heavy lifting on that show, but someone’s got to move and emote underneath them. Also gathering several acting nominations was Ozark (four), Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Trial of the Chicago 7, and Minari (all with three). Joining Emily in Paris in Zero Nominationsville is Meryl Streep, who could have been nominated for The Prom and Let Them All Talk, but wasn’t nominated for either. Somehow I’m sure she’s not sweating that missing nomination for The Prom.

And in “Sometimes the universe gets it right” news, Sia’s arguably terrible-looking Music received zero nominations. Yesterday, Kate Hudson received a nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy. But today, no SAG nom. It was very kind of the SAG Awards nomination voting committee to shut Music out. I really don’t think I could have handled two days in a row of wondering if Sia has some kind of secret blackmail folder that she’s using to prevent Music from solely being recognized by the Razzies.

Here’s the complete list of nominees, who have a loooooong way to go before the SAG Awards ceremony on April 4th.
