The Golden Globe Nominations Are Out So It’s That Time To Scream Over The SNUBS!

February 3, 2021 / Posted by:

The Golden Globes were announced this morning, and Netflix is definitely lounging back with a cigar in their mouth like, “Call me daddy, Hollywood.” Because Netflix cleaned up and got a total of 42 nominations, including six each for Mank and The Crown.

But of course, after the nominations were announced, people said “HUH?” over certain nominations and let out a “SNUBBED!” over those who got a handful of absolutely nothing. One of my top two shows of 2020 was I May Destroy You on HBO Max (the other was the masterpiece Veneno on HBO Max, which I knew wouldn’t get shit) and I, along with others, thought it would get some Golden Globe nominations today. But I guess I May Destroy You is The Weeknd of the Golden Globes because the show and its creator/star Michaela Coel got nothing. Meanwhile, Emily In Paris, James Corden (for The Prom), and Jared Leto (for The Little Things) all got nominations. Have all of the members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association been tested for coronavirus because it’s obvious that some of them have lost their sense of taste.

In the film categories, Mank led with the most nominations and as expected, Promising Young Woman, Nomadland, The Trial of the Chicago 7, Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, and One Night In Miami all got nominations. The HFPA tried to make up for their female director shutouts of 2018 and 2019 by nominating three women for Best Director-Motion Picture. Directors Chloé Zhao (for Nomadland), Regina King (for One Night In Miami), and Emerald Fennell (for Promising Young Woman) were all nominated.

Some of the surprises in the movie categories are nominations for Jared Leto in a movie that has been certified as a stinker, James Corden for The Prom, and Sia’s Music, which got two nominations including one for Kate Hudson. Sia’s obsession/muse Maddie Ziegler is the star of Music and didn’t get nominated. So my thoughts and prayers with Sia’s chandelier today because she’s going to be screaming with anger from it. As for the snubs, Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods, Sophia Loren (for The Life Ahead), and Yuh-jung Youn (for Minari) were all shut out. Movie types called Yuh-jung Youn a frontrunner to win the award for Best Supporting Actress-Motion Picture. Minari did a get nomination but for Best Foreign Language Film, which many believe is a category it should not be in since it’s an American movie.

In the television categories, The Crown got the most nominations with Ted Lasso, Emily In Paris (????), Ratched (????), The Queen’s Gambit, The Flight Attendant, Ozark, The Undoing, and The Great all got love from the Golden Globes. But the snubs were aplenty on the TV side. Besides being one of Netflix’s biggest hit, Bridgerton got shiterton, and FX’s What We Do In The Shadows also got nothing. And as I said above, the HFPA said, “I WILL destroy you,” to the Golden Globe dreams of I May Destroy You.

The full list of nominations is below. This year’s Golden Globes ceremony will go down on February 28, and it’ll be bi-coastal since hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler will co-host from different coasts. Tina will host from The Rainbow Room in NYC and Amy will host from The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills. Well, that’s if the ceremony actually happens, because Meryl Streep was up for The Prom and Let Them All Talk and didn’t get one nomination. And I’m pretty sure that Meryl Streep not getting a GG nomination is ILLEGAL in Hollywood.
