Nicole Kidman Talked About Playing Lucille Ball In “Being The Ricardos”

If you see Debra Messing wandering around looking despondent with mascara running down her face, pulling out clumps of her disheveled Lucy wig, please be kind. She has probably just read that Nicole Kidman didn’t really know shit about Lucille Ball until she signed on to play her in the upcoming Aaron Sorkin movie called Being the Ricardos co-starring Javier Bardem as Desi Arnaz. According to Variety, Nicole has been preparing for the role by watching episodes of I Love Lucy and is ready to “give it a go.” It’s unknown if she has also been doing face-kegels to help her mimic any of Lucille’s signature expressions.

Nicole’s already got a vote of confidence from Lucie Arnaz, Lucy and Desi’s daughter who is also an executive producer. Now she just needs to convince herself she can pull it off. Here’s what Nicole said to Variety about taking on the roll:

It was recently announced she’s [Nicole’s] playing Lucille Ball opposite Javier Bardem as Desi Arnaz in Aaron Sorkin’s “Being the Ricardos.” “I was like, ‘Yeah, I would love to give it a go,’” Kidman says. “With Aaron’s words and his direction and Javier … that’s kind of a wonderful prospect to, you know. But yikes, off we go. Give it a go. Try my best—see if I can do it.”

Kidman’s been watching a lot of “I Love Lucy.” “I love Lucille, having looked now and delved into her,” Kidman says. “She’s an amazing woman. I’m very excited for people to see what Aaron found out about her and the way he’s interpreted Desi and Lucy and the way that it’s so rich. I didn’t know any of this.”

She doesn’t love Lucy, she barely knows her! Little known fact — Every time Nicole Googles “Lucille Ball,” Debra Messing’s eye twitches and she feels a stabbing sensation in her chest. But Nicole’s a great actor, I’m sure she’ll nail it. I’ll reserve my judgment for that first make-up test. We didn’t think Renée Zellweger could pull of Judy Garland but her Oscar begs to differ (in fact, I thought Renée could also have pulled off the Joker, but Joaquin could never have done Judy!). So I think the ladies and their glam squads have got this, it’s Javier as Desi we should be worried about!
