The Grammy Awards Have Been Pushed To March 14, And The SAG Awards Aren’t Happy About That

The Screen Actors Guild Awards honors the year’s achievements in film and TV acting. Their trophy is a little like an Oscar, in that it features a naked man, but the SAG has the unique distinction of having an absolutely tremendous ass, and also he’s holding two masks: comedy and tragedy. Today, that cheeked-up statue is choosing the sad mask, because the SAGs just hit a scheduling snag, and it’s all because the Recording Academy just moved the Grammy Awards to the same night as the SAG Awards.

Back in November, the Recording Academy announced the nominees for the 2021 Grammy Awards, and they also confirmed that the show will air on CBS on January 31st and Trevor Noah will host. But the COVID-19 case numbers in Los  Angeles are currently really high and the county is in on lockdown. Because of this, the Recording Academy has announced that they’re bumping the show by two months to March 14, 2021.

The Recording Academy says they came to this decision after “thoughtful conversations” with health experts, and today SAG-AFTRA is sort of wishing the Recording Academy had been thoughtful enough to loop them in on such conversations. Because March 14th is when the SAG Awards are scheduled to happen. And now it’s tuning into the award season version of “The Boy is Mine,” in that the SAGs really don’t want to share the 14th. via TV Line:

“We are extremely disappointed to hear of the conflicting date, March 14th, announced today for this year’s Grammy Awards telecast,” SAG-AFTRA said in a statement cited by our sister site Deadline. “We announced the same date for the SAG Awards last July with the intent to give the greatest possible scheduling consideration for other awards shows. We expect the same consideration from sister organizations throughout the industry.”

Scheduling for award shows has been a mess, but generally everyone has picked days that don’t conflict with anything. The Golden Globes are scheduled for February 28th. That’s when the Oscars were originally supposed to be held, but they got moved all the way to April 25th. The Independent Spirit Awards will take place April 24th, as they always happen the day before the Oscars.

The Grammys and the SAG Awards happening on the same night is a conflict, although not a huge one. After all, the Grammys give out awards for music, the SAGs for acting. The Grammys are on CBS, while the SAGs are usually on TNT and TBS. You basically just pick which ceremony you want to watch! And really, they’ll both create the same experience for the audience at home, which is the instant feeling to yell, “Oh lord they shouldn’t be breathing that shared air!” two seconds in.
