A “Sex And The City” Revival Is Probably Happening On HBO Max Without Kim Cattrall

It’s a holiday miracle for 3/4 of the Sex and the City crew! And well, for that (ahem) certain cast member who won’t be participating, this news is likely a nightmare before Christmas. Because you know that for the next 12 to 18 hours, Kim Cattrall’s phone will be ringing with people asking if she has any thoughts on the SATC franchise continuing without her as horny icon Samantha Jones. And to be honest, it would be a gift to us all if she picks up the phone even once (because Kim’s capacity for fucks to give left the station a long time ago). But for now, it’s not about her, it’s about Sarah Jessica Parker, Kristin Davis, and Cynthia Nixon, who are reportedly very close to announcing a SATC revival series for HBO Max.

For years, we’ve heard endless talk about how SJP would give her right Manolo for the chance at a third SATC film, but that Kim Cattrall was making things difficult and preventing the gang from getting back together, and they just couldn’t dare do it without Samantha. Kim’s side of the story was that she wanted that chapter closed (a decision that allegedly came with a meatpacking district-sized amount of bullying), and also that she really didn’t have a great time working on the show or the first and second movies. So for now, no third SATC movie, but there is a SATC series in the works, sans-Kim Cattrall via Page Six:

A well-placed industry insider exclusively tells Page Six that the hit franchise will return to the small screen, with a limited series reboot coming to HBO Max, and would include all the original stars – except Kim Cattrall, who has repeatedly said she is not interested in returning.

Sarah Jessica Parker, an executive producer on the series when it aired two decades ago, and HBO Max were reached for comment about this, but they had nothing to say about it.

Last year we heard that a follow-up to SATC was reportedly in the works, but it sounds like this thing with HBO Max is different from that. The SATC follow-up was written by Candace Bushnell, and was titled Is There Still Sex In The City. It focused on love and dating after 50 and was released as a book last year. That book made no mention of Carrie, Charlotte, Miranda, or Samantha. Instead, it followed Sassy, Kitty, Queenie, Tilda Tia, and Marilyn. It has yet to go into production as a TV series. This particular series for HBO Max will be a continuation of the SATC brand, which means it will still be about love and dating after 50, but with the added bonus of being updated for the 2020, post-pandemic crowd. Except no Kim as Samantha, which is really too bad, because I think all SATC fans would have loved hearing Kim make a raunchy joke about getting a COVID test. Something about Samantha asking, “Is it in yet?!,” when getting a three-inch swab shoved up her nose. Christina Aguilera should start practicing that line since I’m sure she’ll get a call about replacing Kim as Samantha (please don’t replace Kim as Samantha).
