Hilary Duff Says The “Lizzie McGuire” Reboot Is Dead

I guess we’ll never get to see an adult Lizzie McGuire solve the murder of her high-school best friend Miranda who disappeared one day in New York and may or may not have been an escort/spy. Sigh! Variety says that Hilary Duff let the world know the Lizzie McGuire reboot planned for Disney+ was not moving forward.

It was just last August when Hilary announced that a revival of Lizzie McGuire was headed to Disney+. But not too long after that production of the show froze up due to some creative differences. According to Variety, Hilary and showrunner, Terri Minsky, wanted a more adult show but Disney wanted that child merchandising money familial appeal. After the first two episodes were shot, Disney decided they wanted nothing to do with the adult-angle and Terri was let go. Hilary begged Disney to move the show to Hulu so that she could give the people the Lizzie McGuire we all need–the Lizzie McGuire we deserve. One who solves murders and has honest discussions about drugs and poverty and systematic racism! Or something, but we’ll never get that. We won’t even get the bland bullshit Disney wanted, it’s all over folks. A Disney spokesperson gave a statement saying:

Lizzie McGuire fans have high expectations for any new stories. Unless and until we are confident we can meet those expectations, we’ve decided to hold off and today, we informed the cast’s representatives that we are not moving forward with the planned series.”

And Hilary announced the news on Instagram writing:

“I know the efforts and conversations have been everywhere trying to make a reboot work but, sadly & despite everyone’s best efforts, it isn’t going to happen. I want any reboot of Lizzie to be honest and authentic to who Lizzie would be today. It’s what the character deserves.”

I love that she used her classic hit, What Dreams Are Made Of, to sneak in a 2020 sucks-reference. The pandemic ranks higher for me than the Lizzie reboot getting axed in terms of upset, but I feel the disappointment all the same. But who’s going to tell poor Gordo? There will be no second chance for him! He’s been friend-zoned for life!
