Prince Harry And Meghan Markle Have Signed A Deal With Spotify To Make Podcasts

Despite the fact that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle look like the exact opposite of the phrase, “You’ve got a face for radio,” Harry and Meghan have decided to venture into the lucrative world of inner-ear entertainment. Hot on the heels of their multi-million dollar deal with Netflix, it’s being reported that Harry and Meghan have signed a deal to create content and programming exclusively for Spotify.

It has been reported that Harry and Meghan’s Netflix deal wouldn’t include anything starring Harry and Meghan, although there have been rumors that they might be making a reality-style docuseries about Meghan’s life. We’ll have to wait and see how that pans out. Their Spotify deal, on the other hand, sounds quite a bit different than what they reportedly plan to do for Netflix.

Variety says that Harry and Meghan created a podcasting company called Archewell Audio, which borrows the name from their non-profit organization, Archewell Foundation, both named after their 1-year-old son Archie. Spotify has a multi-year contract with Archewell Audio, which will produce numerous podcasts, some hosted by Harry and Meghan.

The first podcast by Archewell Audio will be launched in 2021, but don’t worry! You won’t have to wait until next year to hear the dulcet tones of Harry’s accent purr, “And now for a word from today’s sponsors, MeUndies and Stamps-dot-com.” Harry and Meghan will release a special little holiday podcast teaser to hold you over until 2021. Archewell Audio will reportedly have a soft launch featuring a holiday special hosted by Harry and Meghan featuring stories of hope and compassion. I really hope they don’t recycle material from Meghan’s appearance on CNN’s Heroes All-Star Tribute. I know we’re 10 days away from Christmas, but please, let’s not get lazy.

Harry and Meghan released a statement about their latest media deal, and they say they chose to get into podcasting because the check was right. No! It’s because they believe podcasting is a far-reaching medium.

“What we love about podcasting is that it reminds all of us to take a moment and to really listen, to connect to one another without distraction. With the challenges of 2020, there has never been a more important time to do so, because when we hear each other, and hear each other’s stories, we are reminded of how interconnected we all are.”

Spotify has signed many famous people to produce content, like Barack and Michelle Obama, Joe Rogan, Kim Kardashian, and Warner Bros. Variety also notes that Spotify podcasts are free to listen to, so long as you can tolerate the ads, and that Spotify Premium subscribers can hear podcasts ad-less.

Here is the first teaser for Archewell Audio, in which Harry absolutely nails the classic “Is this thing on?” celebrity podcasting cliché. What a natural!

Meghan assures us that all content from Archewell Audio will be made with “kindness and compassion.” Okay, that’s fine, but maybe just once they bench the whole kindness and compassion thing, and they give us what we really want: an 8-part mystery series in the same vein as Serial, on why no one wants to live at Frogmore Cottage.
