The MTV Movie & TV Awards Temporarily Rebranded As The Golden GOAT Awards For 2020
The MTV Movie & TV Awards happened last night, and because of COVID-19, it was a subtle, understated affair. At least in terms of tech specs. Much like the 2020 Primetime Emmys before it, the MTV Movie & TV Awards also pushed the limits of green screen technology. The reason for the GOAT season was that MTV decided this year, they wouldn’t be awarding the best in movies and TV. Because I guess MTV understands that a good number of people have spent the past 8 months streaming old episodes of Jersey Shore while crying. So instead, they honored the greatest of all time – the GOATs – of movies and TV from the past four decades.
The show, which was hosted by Vanessa Hudgens, covered everything, from the 1980s to present day.

The first MTV Movie Award ceremony happened in 1992, but MTV itself launched in 1981, which might explain why the 1984 film Footloose won an award last night. You know 2020 has been the worst year when MTV is like, fuck it, give the trophy to the 36-year-old dance-fighting movie where Kevin Bacon absolutely tears ass in a barn. But that’s not to say it was all a throwback. Deadline reports that MTV also honored Gal Gadot with the GOAT: She-Ro award. Surprisingly, they didn’t also give her the MTV Movie & TV Award for Best Villain for unleashing that terrible all-star cover of “Imagine” on us at the beginning of the pandemic. Kevin Hart took home the award for GOAT: Comedy Giant, a designation that feels like trolling, considering his height. But the most emotional award, and one could say the most truly GOAT worthy, was when Don Cheadle and Robert Downey Jr. presented the late Chadwick Boseman with the GOAT: Hero for the Ages award.

Tonight Chadwick Boseman received the Hero for the Ages honor at the #MTVAwards: Greatest of All Time. We’re looking back at his 2018 Best Hero acceptance speech, because that’s exactly what he was – a hero for all.

MTV also re-awarded Sarah Michelle Gellar and Selma Blair with the GOAT: Legendary Lip Lock award (which they won in 2000, for Cruel Intentions). Except this time when they accepted their awards, they didn’t lock lips, because of COVID. But this might be the only year SMG and Selma have to kiss through a plexiglass partition. Deadline says that the MTV Movie & TV Awards plan to return in 2021 with the same old awards you know and love. So, RIP to the Golden GOAT awards – we hardly knew ye.
